2024 Ford F-150 First Look Review: Still The King

Despite the arrival in recent years of the affordable Maverick, an all-new Ranger, and the electric F-150 Lightning, Ford's conventionally powered F-150 is still the truck of choice for thousands of Americans. The 2024 model ushers in a mid-life facelift for the venerable full-size pickup, introducing changes like revised styling, one of the segment's smartest tailgates, a new standard engine, a high-end Platinum Plus trim, and improved interior technology. There has also been a focus on the PowerBoost Hybrid powertrain, with Ford aiming to double the mix of hybrid pickups manufactured for this model year. The price of this powertrain will also match that of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost, so springing for the hybrid is no longer more expensive. Multiple body styles and trims ensure there's still an F-150 for everyone, so let's investigate what's new for Ford's most important model.

When Is The Ford F-150 Coming Out?

Ford has not specified an exact release date for the F-150, but we expect it to start arriving in showrooms before the end of 2023. The 2024 F-150 will be coming out with reduced ordering complexity (by up to 90%) compared to the previous model, a change that has made some features standard, like the extended range gas tank.

2024 Ford F-150 Price And Competition

The price of the 2024 Ford F-150 begins at $36,570, making it nearly $2,000 more expensive than the 2023 version. That's for the basic XL Regular Cab. From there, the F-150 will cost $43,895 for the STX, $47,620 for the XLT, $63,950 for the Tremor, $64,995 for the Lariat, $73,425 for the Platinum, and $73,730 for the King Ranch. The $10,975 Platinum Plus Package for the Platinum takes the cost of the 2024 F-150 to almost $85k plus destination. One significant factor regarding pricing is how much more the PowerBoost Hybrid now is. Last year, the cheapest PowerBoost-equipped model went for just over $46,000, everything included, but now you'll have to spend at least $58,540 to get this powerful engine. That's because it requires the XLT trim at minimum, along with 4x4. Previously, you could get the PowerBoost in 4x2 guise at the cheaper XL trim level.

The Ford's main rivals will be the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. All of these models offer a wide range of powertrains and options, but only the Tundra has a full hybrid option that can match the Ford's PowerBoost mill.

New Ford F-150 Exterior And Colors

Ford hasn't messed too much with the exterior of the F-150, knowing that the pickup's brand identity is one of its selling points. So, while there have been tweaks to the headlights and grille, the squared-off look is still very much F-150 at first glance.

Lower trims come with an amber horizontal turn indicator and signature lighting with halogen quad beam headlamps, while Lariat to Platinum models have C-clamp DRL signature lighting. As always, the detailing on the front fascia changes from one model to the next, and the look also changes with packages. The STX trim, for instance, has a new coast-to-coast grille and also features Electric Lime accents. The Black Appearance Package is now available from the STX to Lariat trims, and the Platinum gets these blacked-out accents straight from the factory. On the King Ranch, there is a two-color metal exterior finish.

New wheel designs in various finishes will be available, starting with 17-inch steel wheels on the most basic versions. Various alloys then replace these, culminating with 22-inch items in black or chrome on the priciest trims.

More significant than the styling changes is what Ford has done to make the 2024 F-150 even more useful. Accessing the truck bed is now easier thanks to an increased bumper depth and a step cut-out that's wider, but the available Pro Access Tailgate is the big news. With this equipped, the new Ford F-150 pickup truck is the only vehicle in its class with a 100-degree fully opened integrated swing gate. It opens from the driver's side, which means the walking distance to the tailgate handle is shortened, and Ford says its operation is simpler when towing.

Thanks to built-in stops, the chances of banging the door into the trailer jack are lower. Perhaps the biggest advantage is being able to access more items in the bed within an arm's reach, instead of stretching or bending over a traditional tailgate. The new tailgate can also be opened at 37- and 70-degree positions.

A new standard bed storage box is equipped, taking full advantage of the Pro Access Tailgate. Customers who opt for the F-150 Tremor can now select a new modular front bumper in Tarnished Dark Anodized and Carbon Black. Regarding main paint colors for the 2024 Ford F-150, the basic XL comes in Agate Black, Atlas Blue, Antimatter Blue, Carbonized Gray, Iconic Silver, and Oxford White - all are metallics besides Oxford White. The STX adds the option of Rapid Red and Avalanche, while other select trims introduce shades such as Darkened Bronze and Star White.

Ford F-150 Dimensions

Dimensions for the 2024 Ford F-150 are much the same as before. It comes in Regular Cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew configurations, while bed sizes are 5.5, 6.5, and eight feet. All models are around 80 inches in width without the mirrors, but up to 95.7 inches with the large side mirrors extended. With trailer tow mirrors, this trick is almost 106 inches wide. The body length varies from 209.1 to 250.3 inches depending on the model. Height, meanwhile, maxes out at around 77 inches for most models. The Tremor is the outlier here as it stands 79.3 inches tall. Most 4x4 models as well as the Tremor share the greatest ground clearance of 9.4 inches. The wheelbase range is between 122.8 and 157.2 inches.

The best approach/departure/ramp breakover angles are 27.6/26.3/23.5 degrees, respectively, but no individual model is best in all categories. The Tremor has the best approach angle of the lot, though.

The curb weight will be over 5,500 pounds for the heaviest models.

Ford F-150 Engine And Performance

Multiple engine options will be available for the Ford F-150 once again. But whereas there were six options before, there seem to be only four now. The previous 3.3-liter V6 has been discontinued as the base engine, with the 2.7-liter V6 EcoBoost now being standard. Provided that outputs are the same, this mill makes 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Next is the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost, making 400 hp and 510 lb-ft, while the 5.0-liter V8 generates 400 hp and 410 lb-ft for buyers who demand eight cylinders.

The 3.5-liter PowerBoost adds an electric motor and 1.5-kWh lithium-ion battery to the V6 to develop 430 hp and 570 lb-ft, making it the most potent of all the engine options. In this guise, a four-wheel-drive version of the F-150 has been timed completing the 0-60 mph sprint in under 5.5 seconds. It's unclear if the Power Stroke diesel engine has been retained for 2024, but it was not listed on the preliminary specification sheet. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all models retain the ten-speed automatic transmission. Certain specs mentioned here come from the 2023 F-150 range, but Ford has mentioned that horsepower and torque have been optimized for the 2024 lineup, so we'll update this section when new information becomes available.

Towing capacity for the 2024 F-150 maxes out at 13,500 pounds, and the payload is 2,455 lbs in its optimal configuration. To make towing easier, the Ford comes with Pro Trailer Hitch Assist to keep an eye on a trailer and make backing up easier. Ford has subjected the 2024 F-150 to extreme torture testing to ensure that it's as dependable as truck lovers expect.

Gas Mileage

Gas mileage figures for the 2024 model should mirror those of the 2023 version. That means customers can expect best numbers of 25/25/25 mpg city/highway/combined for the hybrid model with RWD, dropping to 23 mpg across all cycles when this version has 4WD. Best figures for the rest of the range are 22 mpg combined for the 2.7-liter V6, 21 mpg combined for the 3.5-liter V6, and 20 mpg combined for the V8. Naturally, 4WD models use even more fuel. The heaviest of the bunch is the Tremor variant with the V8, 4WD, and running on E85 gas - configured like this, the F-150 only manages 11/16/13 mpg.

Ford says that the extended-range gas tank that was so popular is now standard. For gas-only models and those without the shortest 122-inch wheelbase, this works out to 36 gallons. That equates to a range of about 792 miles with the 2.7-liter V6 and RWD. The hybrid's specs differ - it has a 30.6-gallon tank, so it can cover about 765 miles between refills.

Ford F-150 Interior And Cargo

The latest generation of the Ford F-150 has the nameplate's best interior yet. Not only is it spacious and packed with tech, but the top trims will rival some luxury sedans for sheer opulence. For the 2024 model year, the 12-inch LCD capacitive touchscreen is standard on every model, complementing the standard 12-inch digital instrument cluster. This is a huge step up from the eight-inch touchscreen that was equipped to lower trims previously.

Running SYNC 4 software, the system should be easy to use, but the F-150 still has several chunky physical controls for quick adjustments on the move. More tech comes via an optional head-up display, a feature offered on the F-150 for the first time. This includes custom views for the BlueCruise hands-free driver-assistance system. Speaking of BlueCruise, version 1.2 of the system is available for the 2024 F-150, and it comes with new functionality like lane change assist and in-lane repositioning. This hands-free system can be accessed at the point of purchasing, during the 90-day complimentary trial, or at any point thereafter via an annual or monthly subscription. Another new feature is the ability to display two views simultaneously on the 12-inch screen when in Tow/Haul, Off-Road, and Rock Crawl modes.

Ford has also added Stolen Vehicle Services, a first for any vehicle sold in North America, which can aid in the location and recovery of the pickup if it's stolen.

The materials and seats inside the Ford F-150 will differ from trim to trim. Base models stick with hard-wearing cloth upholstery (with available vinyl), but upper trims will have leather-lined cabins. The XLT and Lariat seats are finished in Medium Dark Smoked Truffle with a black interior. On the King Ranch, there is a bi-metallic color scheme inside. The Tremor has colorful accent stitching and floor mats, while the Platinum Plus has a Smoked Truffle interior theme with Bronze Copper Accents. Platinum Blue accents with genuine brushed aluminum can be found on the Platinum model.

The cargo space in the Ford F-150 is the same as for the 2023 model, starting at 52.8 cubic feet for the smallest bed. That will rise to 62.3 cubes for the mid-sized bed and 77.4 cubes for the largest bed. Seating capacity will range from three to six depending on the body style and options selected, and there will once again be various storage spaces and the ability to stow items out of sight beneath the second-row bench.

Pro Power Onboard is available at varying levels on the F-150, with the 2.0-kW output on gas trunks enough to keep speakers, blenders, or mini fridges running. The PowerBoost has 2.4 kW of standard power for 85 hours of runtime with a full gas tank, answering all your carpentry and masonry needs. The 7.2-kW option has enough juice to keep a mobile metal/welding shop or dirt-bike mobile shop going for 32 hours.
