2024 Jeep Gladiator First Look Review: Refining The Rebel

Essentially a Wrangler with an open bed at the back, the Jeep Gladiator has been the adventure pickup of choice in the mid-size segment since it arrived a few years ago. The superb off-roading capability and ability to fully immerse yourself in the outdoors with the removable doors and roof differentiate the Jeep from rivals like the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado. However, the Gladiator has never been as comfortable or refined as its rivals, which might explain why the facelifted 2024 model introduces a more polished interior with better tech and more comfort features. That doesn't mean it's forgotten what it is, as Jeep also launches two tough new trims called the Mojave X and Rubicon X. Here's everything we know about the one mid-size pickup that looks much more comfortable being flung through the mud than standing outside the mall.

When Is The Jeep Gladiator Coming Out?

Orders have already opened, and the 2024 Jeep Gladiator's release date in the USA is set for the end of 2023. That's when customers can expect the pickup truck to arrive at dealerships.

2024 Jeep Gladiator Price And Competition

Jeep has not shared the price of the 2024 Gladiator yet, but this has never been the most affordable pickup in the segment. The 2023 model starts at a cost of $38,775 for the Sport, so the base 2024 version may crest the $40k mark for the first time. Expect the MSRP to reach $60k for a fully loaded model, money that could buy you a decently specced Ford F-150 Lariat.

Other rivals in the mid-size pickup segment include the all-new Ford Ranger, which starts at $32,565. We'd strongly consider the Ranger Raptor at $55,365 over a highly specced Gladiator, but the Jeep does offer an abundance of off-road kit, hugely appealing styling, and unique open-air options. Something entirely different in this segment is the Honda Ridgeline, which can be considered the antithesis of the Gladiator with its unibody construction and far more refined ride, although it can't hope to match the rugged Jeep off-road. The Ridgeline begins at $38,800.

New Jeep Gladiator Exterior And Colors

There isn't another pickup truck in this class with the rugged, playful vibe of the Jeep Gladiator's exterior. The seven-slot grille has been slimmed down and now comes with black textured slots, neutral gray metallic bezels, and a body-color surround on certain trims. On the Willys, there are gloss black slots and bezels. Jeep claims the vertical slots improve cooling, and it serves one other purpose: identifying the truck as a Jeep.

Elsewhere, the 2024 model has a new trail-ready stealth antenna integrated into the front windshield, replacing the older steel mast antenna. This change reduces the chances of snagging trees or brushes on the trail.

There are seven new wheel designs to choose from, while standard 17-inch steel wheels make way for alloys with various finishes on upper trims. Tires differ by trim, too, with the Willys getting 32-inch mud-terrain rubber in place of the 33-inch all-terrain tires on models like the Mojave and Rubicon.

The new Jeep Gladiator pickup truck's open-air options are truly unique in this segment. A premium soft-top is now standard, but customers can also choose from two hardtops, a Sunrider for Hardtop option with the dual-door group with half doors, and even fully removable doors. The total number of configurations is staggering, but it means the Gladiator can be specified for each customer's needs.

Anvil is one of the new Jeep Gladiator exterior colors on the menu for 2024. It joins Firecracker Red, Granite Crystal, Silver Zynith, High Velocity, Hydro Blue, Sarge, Bright White, and Black as the exterior paint options for buyers to choose from.

Equipment varies greatly across the range. The Sport S now comes with a Gorilla glass windshield, but upper trims enjoy features like LED front foglights, steel rock rails, high-clearance fender flares, a performance hood with a center scoop, and steel front bumpers.

The new Mojave X and Rubicon X boast an integrated off-road camera and steel bumpers, both front and rear. There are several upfit packages by AEV that can further improve the Gladiator's abilities, adding items like a 2-inch suspension kit, 35- or 37-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain T/A KO2 tires, and AEV components like a non-winch cover plate, an EX front bumper, and a trail camera relocation kit.

Jeep Gladiator Dimensions

Slotting into the mid-size segment, the Jeep Gladiator's dimensions include a length of 218 inches, making it over seven inches longer than the new Ford Ranger SuperCrew. The Gladiator's overall width is 73.8 inches, and its height varies between 73.1 and 76.1 inches based on the trim and/or whether the soft- or hardtop roof is equipped. All models have a 137.3-inch wheelbase.

An excellent off-roader, the ground clearance of the Gladiator ranges between ten and 11.6 inches. Maximum approach/breakover/departure angles are 44.7/20.9/26 inches, respectively, with Mojave and Rubicon models having the edge in this respect. However, with several available upfit packages, the Gladiator can be transformed into an even more rugged beast. These modifications can add 37-inch tires, helping to raise ground clearance of the Rubicon to 16 inches. It will also increase approach/breakover/departure angles to 57/26/34 degrees, respectively, and allow for water fording up to 36 inches.

The lightest Gladiator has a curb weight of 4,640 pounds, while the Rubicon with the automatic transmission is heaviest at 5,031 lbs.

Jeep Gladiator Engine And Performance

Earlier in 2023, Jeep announced the discontinuation of the Gladiator EcoDiesel. This leaves the trusted naturally-aspirated 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 as the sole engine offering for the Jeep Gladiator. Producing 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, the 0-60 mph time for the Gladiator is just over seven seconds, but this engine is tuned for low-down torque over outright performance, a calibration that benefits off-roading. If sprinting times matter to you, consider the new Ranger with its available 315-hp EcoBoost V6. Maximum towing capacity for the Jeep is 7,700 lbs.

What the Ranger doesn't have is a manual gearbox, with the six-speeder being standard on the Gladiator and providing a class-best crawl ratio of up to 84:1. An eight-speed automatic is optional with a crawl ratio of up to 77:1.

The sturdy ladder-type frame and standard four-wheel drive provide a brilliant foundation for off-road prowess in the Gladiator. Customers can choose from four 4x4 systems: Command-Trac with a part-time transfer case and 2.72:1 low range ratio, Selec-Trac with a full-time transfer case and 2.72:1 low range ratio, Rock-Trac with a part-time transfer case and 4:1 low range ratio, and Rock-Trac with a full-time transfer case and 4:1 low range ratio.

The Trail Rated or Desert Rated badges hint at specs like Dana 44 heavy-duty front and rear axles, a two-speed transfer case, front/rear tow hooks, and three skid plates. The Rubicon is one of the most capable trims with its electronic front sway-bar disconnect and front-/rear-axle lockers, while the Mojave is a true high-speed desert runner with its FOX 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks with reservoirs, FOX front hydro jounce bumpers, and suspension lift.

For 2024, the Willys comes with a Tru-Lock rear-axle locker, and an Off-Road+ mode that adjusts the throttle and shift points. Another change for this year is the full-time transfer case on the Mojave X and Rubicon X.

Gas Mileage

According to Jeep, the Gladiator returns 16/23/19 mpg city/highway/combined with the manual gearbox and 17/22/19 mpg with the automatic. These figures will obviously be affected by how you use your Gladiator, and any off-road adventure will need you to plan carefully.

Equipped with a 22-gallon gas tank, the Gladiator's range is about 418 miles.

Jeep Gladiator Interior And Cargo

The cliff-like dashboard and large, chunky controls are still features of the Jeep Gladiator's interior. It's never been the most refined environment, but that's not the point. The Jeep's cabin must remain durable and easy to keep clean even when subjected to harsh conditions. Still, Jeep has made some effort to refine the Gladiator's cabin to keep up with newer rivals.

A 12.3-inch touchscreen interface with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is now standard across the lineup. This is a massive upgrade over the five-, seven-, and 8.4-inch displays that used to be found inside the Gladiator. The system runs Uconnect 5 software that has generally featured crisp graphics and a logical menu structure. With full-array local dimming (FALD) backlight technology, Jeep says the new display is easier to read in open-air conditions. All models also have an enhanced hands-free voice recognition system with seven-microphone array technology.

Embedded in this infotainment system is the new Jeep Adventure Guides with Trails Offroad. Customers can view guides and maps for 62 Jeep Badge of Honor trails, including the popular Rubicon Trail in California. A premium subscription unlocks over 3,000 trail guides. Furthermore, the infotainment now has five user profiles with a valet mode and various customizable settings, a customizable home screen with one-touch operation, the ability to connect two Bluetooth devices at the same time, and SiriusXM 360L and Pandora. Standard dual USB Type-C ports in front can charge devices four times faster than before, with a total of seven USB ports available. Over-the-air updates for maps on models with navigation are available.

The wrapped instrument panel has new soft-touch surfaces in either fabric or polyurethane, and accessory electronics can now be mounted on the dashboard thanks to new AMPS brackets. All trims receive a bolstered standard specification. Examples include adaptive cruise control on the Sport S, a seven-inch TFT cluster and dual-zone climate control on the Mojave, and proximity keyless entry on upper trims. The seats in the Jeep Gladiator range from cloth to premium cloth and leather. 12-way power front seats are now available, and these can be finished in Nappa leather.

Jeep has improved the safety specification of the Gladiator, too. All models now enjoy standard side-curtain airbags for both rows, while forward collision warning is standard on the Sport S and above. This year, the second-row outboard setbelts come with pretensioners and load limiters, and there are structural enhancements for better protection if a side-impact collision occurs. There are over 85 available active and passive safety features on the Gladiator.

A single bed size measures 60.3 inches in length with the tailgate closed. This is enough for the cargo space in the Jeep Gladiator to max out at 35.3 cubic feet. Depending on the configuration, the Gladiator's payload is up to 1,725 lbs.
