2024 Tesla Model 3 Debuts With New Looks, Longer Range, And Faster Charging Rate

Reveal / 40 Comments

Known internally as the "Project Highland," the entry-level Tesla also gets a new cabin.

After a series of sightings and leaks, the updated Tesla Model 3 has finally made its global debut. The entry-level Tesla EV now comes with a longer range, faster charging rate, and a bevy of changes inside and out.

Interestingly, Tesla has not provided information for the North American Model 3. Australia, Europe, and China have already rolled out the updated model on their respective Tesla websites, giving us an idea of what has changed beyond what the images provide.

Internally named the Project Highland, the updated Model 3 boasts a sleeker body, resulting in better aerodynamics and a longer driving range. Specifically, the new Model 3's overall dimensions are slightly lower, longer, and narrower than its predecessor due to its revised bodywork.

The new Model 3 is also lighter, with non-US Tesla websites quoting 3,891 pounds - substantially lighter than the current 4,034 lbs listed on Tesla's US website.

These changes result in a better overall range. The new Model 3 in Standard Range RWD guise can now cover up to 319 miles on a single charge, up from 305 miles of the outgoing model. The Model 3 Long Range AWD went up from 374 to 391 miles.

These figures are based on the more forgiving WLTP cycle and quoted for 18- and 19-inch wheels in Europe and Australia. Tesla also hasn't provided figures for the Model 3 Long Range Performance variant, which is quoted to have 315 miles under EPA standards.

The charging rate has likewise been updated, with up to 175 miles of range added after 15 minutes of charging, up from 147 miles of the outgoing model.

Design-wise, the most notable change is found on the chiseled front end, featuring cleaner character lines and the redesigned headlamp housings and signature LED daytime running lights, reminiscent of the Tesla Model X, which also got an update this year. The hood's sharp crease now extends to the fenders.

Meanwhile, the rear comes with updated C-shaped taillights we've seen before, plus a Tesla wordmark replacing the logo, while fresh multi-spoke wheel designs add to the modern aesthetics. Two new colors, Ultra Red and Stealth Gray, are also being introduced to the lineup, both touted to change with light and viewing angle. These two replace Red Multi-Coat as the premium color option.

Tesla has also given the Model 3 a new lounge-like interior featuring a combination of aluminum and fabric materials. Ambient lighting has been added, while acoustic glass enhances soundproofing.

Meanwhile, the central screen is still 15.4 inches, albeit with slimmer bezels for less negative space. A new 8.0-inch rear display with integrated climate, ventilation, and infotainment controls has also been added.

The American automaker has introduced a 17-speaker system with two subwoofers and two amplifiers to the Long Range AWD. The Standard Range RWD version has nine speakers, one subwoofer, and one amplifier. Dog, Camp, and Sentry Modes are retained in the updated model, as well as the infamous Autopilot.

Tesla went for steering-mounted "gear" controls instead of a traditional lever - a similar execution found on the Model S and Model X. The automaker's emblem on the tiller has also been replaced with the Tesla wordmark.

Unfortunately, specifics about the battery sizes and performance are still unknown. Deliveries in Europe and the Middle East will reportedly happen towards the end of October, while Australia will get them early next year.

Availability in North America, along with other details, is expected to be revealed at a later date.
