2025 Chevrolet Corvette May Lose The 'Vette's Most Contentious Feature

Rumor / 18 Comments

This is a surprise since most real-life owners seem to love it.

The C8 Chevrolet Corvette may appear for the 2025 model year with a comprehensively redesigned interior. This is according to a secondhand report from CorvetteBlogger, which claims that the so-called 'Great Wall of Buttons' along the center console will be deleted.

When we first saw the design, our immediate thought was that the console had A LOT of buttons, and this looked like it could pose a distraction to drivers. But several owners say that the adjustment period was very short and that they are able to accurately select functions without even looking away from the road.

As with several other cars, a novel layout can take a little while to get used to, but General Motors seems to think that the GWOB was a bad call. Or maybe it is simply refreshing the cabin to give it a more retro look, which would suit the split-window Corvette prototype we saw earlier this year.

Normally, we wouldn't put much weight behind a rumor based on a secondhand conversation, but reports claiming that the GWOB would disappear from the Corvette have been swirling since 2021. At the time, reports claimed that the redesign would debut in the MY2023 Corvette, but that obviously hasn't happened. We have several theories for this.

Supply chain issues plagued the auto industry for a long period after the outbreak of COVID-19, and it's quite possible that GM opted not to go ahead with the redesign as a result. Perhaps production delays caused by stifled supply meant that not enough Corvettes with the current layout have been built.

Another possibility is that GM is holding off on the change because it knows many owners have become accustomed to it, but that doesn't explain why the possibility of a cabin refresh is resurfacing two years after it first became public knowledge.

The simplest theory is that these rumors are all just hogwash.

Should the redesign take place, one can't help but wonder where all this switchgear will be relocated to, and one possibility is worrying. If GM is redesigning the cabin to reduce costs, there's a strong chance that the physical buttons will stay in their current location but be replaced by some sort of touch-sensitive interface, and that would be a bad move.

Our suggestion? Stick with physical buttons. Move the top half (those for the driver) to the driver side of the center console, but keep them in the same order. Use that freed-up space to bring about the return of the passenger grab handle that we saw in the C7 Corvette. This would make it clearer to first-time Corvette users which buttons are for the driver and which are for the passenger, and for existing owners of a C8 who upgrade to the facelifted model, the layout will be somewhat familiar.

Hopefully, spy shots will bring us concrete evidence of the C8's future cabin layout soon.
