2024 BMW 4 Series Convertible Review: Beauty And The Breeze

Buyers in the USA who want to cruise along in a premium machine with the wind in their hair are likely shopping in the segment that the 2024 BMW 4 Series Convertible calls home. Alongside rivals like the Audi A5 Convertible and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLE Convertible, the options are decidedly German. But that's no bad thing when it comes to opulence, power, and status - all characteristics the premium convertible should embody - since all three of these automakers have excelled at creating vehicles of this caliber. In the case of the BMW 4 Series Convertible, an elegant and plush cabin ticks the first box, while the last criterion is met by the BMW roundel atop the prominent grille. As for power, the 2024 4 Series Convertible is available in two flavors: the 255-horsepower 430i base models or the powerful 382-hp M440i versions. The latter is also equipped with an M Sport differential and specially tuned suspension to enhance the drive. Despite all this allure, the 4 Series Convertible isn't the last word in premium drop-top thrills, and as it isn't the cheapest option among its German rivals, you may want to do your homework before signing on the dotted line.

2024 BMW 4 Series Convertible Changes: What’s The Difference vs The 2023 4 Series Convertible?

There's not too much that's different on the new BMW 4 Series Convertible, but worth noting is the upgrade to BMW's Curved Display, which is comprised of a 12.3-inch information cluster behind the steering wheel and a 14.9-inch central display for infotainment. The setup runs the latest iDrive 8 software and means fewer physical buttons and controls; it means occupants will have to use touch control or make use of BMW's Intelligent Personal Assistant. Another addition to the center console is a new toggle gear selector.

The only other changes are that M high-gloss Shadowline trim is standard on the M440i model's window surrounds, while Aluminum Rhombicle interior trim replaces Aluminum Tetragon.

2024 BMW 4 Series Convertible Handling And Driving Impressions

Those with a primary focus on crisp handling will likely be looking at a coupe instead of a convertible. That doesn't mean there aren't brilliant roadsters and convertibles that provide superb handling and the utmost in thrills from behind the wheel, though - but the BMW 4 Series Convertible doesn't quite make it to these levels. Precise steering and a well-tuned chassis mean there is fun to be had, and the suspension - while able to be taut enough for spirited driving - is generally soft to play into the leisurely characteristics of a roof-down cruiser. Buyers' experience of handling will likely be based on their expectations here, as those who want the 4 Series Convertible for the relaxed boulevard cruiser it is won't be disappointed. Those who want something sportier will be happier with a tin-top counterpart. What can't be disputed is the sheer muscle and appealing soundtrack of the optional 382-hp six-cylinder engine in the M440i; this is a powertrain that impresses regardless of what BMW it powers.

Verdict: Is The 2024 BMW 4 Series Convertible A Good Car?

Buying a convertible is not a purchase one makes for sensible reasons: drop-tops tend to skimp on practicality and space in favor of style, and the 4 Series Convertible is no different. As a two-door leisure car with a roof that rolls back, it excels and meets all the requirements for comfort, class, and presence. But against some rivals, its high price tag and lack of dynamism don't do it any favors; almost any review of the BMW 4 Series laments that the drive is either too soft or too hard, with the respective models representing each end of this scale. Sensibility aside, however, the emotional component of buying a convertible - especially one backed by a brand with this much pedigree - is likely the driving force for shopping in this segment in particular. In that regard, there's very little reason not to recommend the Bimmer. It's powerful, especially in M440i guise, it's beautiful, it's plush, and it's comfortable to drive. As long as you're not buying it for the feeling you get from behind the wheel of its 3 Series sibling, and you have the money, go ahead.

What 2024 BMW 4 Series Convertible Model Should I Buy?

The 2024 4 Series Convertible offers a bit of variation, and if you're buying it for the looks and leisure, the entry-level 430i models are fine - they drive well and aren't lethargic, and depending on whether you need all-wheel drive for better grip, you can stick with the RWD versions without feeling done in. But for those who want a drop-top with a bit more power, the M440i is the one to go for - and we'd stick with the RWD variant for the most tail-happy experience.
