2024 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe

Essentially just a 3 Series with a sloping roof and grossly disproportionate grille, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe seems like an unnecessarily flashy sedan. Motivated by a 255-horsepower turbocharged inline-four engine, or a 382-hp turbo-six in M-Performance guise, the compact car does a good job balancing performance with efficiency. And while its looks might be questionable on the outside, the interior is undisputably attractive and luxurious. This combination of premium styling and sports car-esque potential sees the 2024 4 Series Gran Coupe give competitors like the Kia Stinger GT and Audi A5 Sportback a run for their money. However, its overly bold exterior look could hold it back in a segment that cares more about appearances than actual performance chops.

As you'd expect from a premium European car, the price of the new 2024 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is on the high side. In base guise, the 430i will cost you $48,300, while the xDrive adds $2,000 for the all-wheel drivetrain. Starting with the M440i, you get access to the stronger six-cylinder engine, but you have to pay $61,050 for that. Once again, an extra $2,000 gets you AWD on the M440i xDrive. These prices of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe are MSRP and do not include any additional fees like the $995 destination charge.

Even the timidest of BMW sedans can outpace lesser vehicles with ease thanks to their easy power delivery and responsive handling. In the case of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, it is just the right size for the amount of power on tap, and while steering feedback isn't amazing, there is enough heft to the wheel to ensure an engaging and enjoyable experience. Naturally, this is enhanced in the M440i, which comes with M Sport suspension that sacrifices a little comfort in the name of far better handling and improved driver confidence. Still, this is more of a city slicker than a track beast, so its limits can only be pushed so far. If a fun commute is what you're after, then look no further. Even with the standard four-cylinder engine, you get a luxurious and comfortable drive with masterful German engineering. Most road imperfections are soaked up with ease, and the well-built cabin dampens road and wind noise almost completely, though the six-cylinder engine hums pleasantly in the background.

If you can look past the over-the-top styling of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, you will discover a sports sedan that is both comfortable and fun to drive, up to a point. It could be called a four-door coupe, thanks to its sloping roofline, but it remains a relatively practical vehicle, which helps this European luxury compact compete with more mainstream rivals in the USA. And while it may not be as athletic as some of its siblings, the 4 is sportier than most cars in the segment, especially if you opt for one of the six-cylinder M440i models. In this configuration, it is difficult to resist. It is hard to find any faults with the 2024 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, apart from the glaringly obvious one on its nose, but a high standard specification, good performance potential, and a luxurious interior more than make up for that misstep.

While there is nothing particularly wrong with the 430i, especially when you consider that it is a relatively affordable sports sedan, we can't help but feel the need to splurge on the 440i range with its more powerful turbocharged six-cylinder engine. You can save a couple of grand if you don't live in a cold-weather area that warrants the xDrive all-wheel drivetrain. Nevertheless, you get a sport-tuned suspension and access to the Cooling and High-Performance Tire package.
