2023 Audi A3 Sedan

The A3 is the smallest Audi available in the USA, and while the hatchback version may have died out locally some time ago, the sedan version soldiered on. Last year, an all-new model was introduced to compete against other subcompact Germans like the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class. It falls a little short in terms of performance, though, with just 201 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. But, with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to assist, it's one of the most fuel-efficient options in the segment. Combined with a decent array of standard features, a well-built cabin, and eye-catching styling, this makes it a great value proposition.

The cost of the Audi A3 starts at $35,400 for the Premium trim in FWD guise. Adding quattro all-wheel drive adds $2,000. For the Premium Plus base model, the MSRP is $38,800, with the quattro version retailing for $40,800. These prices exclude the $1,095 destination charge.

Though it may lack power when compared to direct competitors, the 2023 A3 employs a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that works for its slight size. It's not much of a speedster, though, with the S3 reserved for a bit more excitement from under the hood. That doesn't mean the A3 is without its charms - the little sedan handles particularly well. This is especially true when the quattro AWD system is equipped. If you need to deal with slippery roads or snow, opting for a quattro model is essential.

Regardless of drivetrain, the steering feels light, which makes the car easy to control, albeit less engaging than some competitors. Switching to Dynamic mode does add some semblance of feedback, though effortless commuter seems to be more what Audi was shooting for. To this end, ride comfort is good, and the suspension smooths over most bumps in the road. This is something even the Mercedes CLA struggles to achieve.

As an entry point into the Audi range, the A3 is a good vehicle. It may lack the athleticism and practicality of larger models, especially those with a six-cylinder engine, but that's par for the course in this segment - and it handles well, is pleasant to spend time in, and looks great. This makes it enjoyable in its own way, and you'll definitely find the fuel bill pleasurable.

And while it may be a little slower and less thrilling than its BMW and Mercedes counterparts, it feels more comfortable on the road with its softer suspension setup. This helps make it a perfect daily driver. The rear seats are a little cramped, and the trunk is on the small side, but neither of these are faults unique to the Audi - consider these segment-specific traits. Additionally, the A3 has a respectable list of features even in standard specification, and the available options can see it outfitted just as opulently as any competitor. While there's no official safety review for the 2023 Audi A3 Sedan, there are many driver assists available. Overall this is a well-rounded sedan - it may not be perfect, but it may be the perfect introductory point to the renowned German brand's lineup.

Audi offers the A3 in two affordable trim levels, though it's the top Premium Plus model that we'd buy if it were our money, albeit with the Technology Package added.
