Alfa Romeo On Track To Break 33-Year-Old Record

But it's not out of the woods yet.

According to Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato, the Italian brand is finally turning a profit on every car it builds, and it's on track to break a 33-year-old record.

While profiting off building cars may not seem like big news, it's something Alfa Romeo has struggled with for some time, and it means the brand is in a place where Imparato believes it can achieve record sales within the next two years.

The news comes via Autocar, who spoke to the CEO about the brand's current state, with the Frenchman optimistic that Alfa can beat its current sales record of 223,643 vehicles in a year by 2025. That current record occurred more than three decades ago, in 1990, and 203,787 of those vehicles were sold in Europe.

Since then, the brand has seen a steady decline in sales figures, to the point that its annual reports now speak of percentages without divulging how many cars were sold. When last recorded publicly in 2021, Alfa had sold 25,964 in Europe and 18,250 in the US.

However, back then, Alfa had a wider range of products compared to recent years. At present, only four Alfa Romeo models are available, those being the Giulia sedan, Stelvio and Tonale crossovers, and the limited edition 33 Stradale supercar.

It's fair to say that the Giulia and Stelvio have failed to reinvigorate the brand as planned, and while they're thrilling to drive and arguably built to a higher standard than ever before, they haven't exactly justified the $1 billion expense of developing the Giorgio platform they're based upon.

After the formation of Stellantis, platforms like Giorgio have been done away with, with all the focus on modular STLA platforms to underpin a variety of models.

While Alfa Romeo is selling more models than it has for years, Imparato is quick to say, "Selling is one thing. Making money is another story." While the target is record sales in 2025, he's under no illusion that the brand has to remain profitable if it wants to be around ten years from now. "I don't care about volumes because Stellantis don't need volume," he says.

There is hope for the brand, and the Tonale has been a key model in making the brand profitable. But it needs more. New models are incoming, with an electric replacement for the Giulia arriving in 2025 and a new small SUV, currently codenamed Project Kid, arriving next year as the brand's first mainstream EV. This new model leaked recently and has been rendered in hi-res by digital artist Masera in the image below.

According to Imparato, turning genuine profits would allow the brand to once again expand its model lineup, with the boss hinting to Autocar that a replacement for the Giulietta hatchback could be in the cards.
