As the popularity of the sedan started fading, Mercedes-Benz and its AMG division created some performance cars that kept the segment vibrant alongside fellow German powerhouses BMW and Audi. The price of the 2023 Mercedes-AMG E63 S starts at $112,800 before options. Ticking the boxes for some of the more advanced driver assists will see the cost rise well above $120k. This is the MSRP for the Mercedes-AMG E63 and excludes a $1,150 destination charge.

As far as performance sedans go, the AMG E63 S is one of the easiest to drive, with a point-and-shoot nature that makes it ideal for even beginners to pilot. For those that are a little more experienced, it's no less fun and sprinting between traffic lights will become second nature. The various drive modes include the expected Comfort, Slippery, and Individual settings, while Sport, Sport Plus, and Race will pin you back in your seat with varying degrees of enthusiasm. There are also four Dynamics settings to choose from that will cater the handling experience to your needs and allow some slip if that's what you're going for.

In its softest setting, the E63 Sedan is a wonderful, comfortable cruiser masquerading as a demure executive. We say masquerading because, while it absorbs road-surface abrasions and keeps passengers isolated from jostling about too much, it's still quite stiff: There's no mistaking the duality in its personality. It'll handle corners taken at speed with alacrity like the sporty sedan it is.

Although dynamically excellent, the star of the show remains the brawny 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that makes 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.

Since this is the V8-powered E63 sedan's final hurrah, it feels like a loaded question. Naturally, almost any product from Mercedes that's been blessed by AMG ticks the performance and luxury boxes, and the 2023 Mercedes-AMG E63 is no different. It's both thrilling and pleasant to drive (that's an important distinction), it's supremely classy and comfortable inside, and on the safety review side, the Mercedes-AMG E63 S gets the benefit of top-notch results for the E-Class on which it's based. The joy of the E63 S is in the dual roles it plays, allowing for thrills when pushed while also maintaining that classy image for when you're in a suit in between meetings. It's an excellent way to celebrate the V8 in this format, since what lies ahead is electrification.

The USA only gets one version of the E63 and it's the S derivative. However, for it's last year, there is the Final Edition package that will be made available to just 999 buyers that equips a special exterior paint and some bespoke interior trimmings. If you can get you hands on it before it's sold out, it'll make for a great collector's item, but even if you can't, buying the regular version won't be settling for a lesser product. The head-up display, Driver Assistance package, the high-end Burmester surround sound system, and multi-contour front seats with massage function are must-haves to add to the overall feel of the car, and will put the price of a new Mercedes-AMG E63 S sedan at around $123k, excluding delivery.
