Automobili Pininfarina B95 Revealed As 1,900-HP Electric Hyper Barchetta

Reveal / 7 Comments

Sprinting from 0-60 mph in two seconds without a windshield sounds like our kind of fun.

  • World's first all-electric hyper Barchetta
  • Only 10 examples of the B95 will be made priced from €4.4 million
  • 0-60 mph in less than two seconds, top speed over 186 mph
  • 120 kWh battery and four electric motors for 1,874 horsepower total output

Automobili Pininfarina (AP) has introduced the B95 - the world's first pure-electric open-top hypercar, which will make its global debut at Monterey Car Week alongside the Battista Edizione Nino Farina hyper GT and the Pura Vision design concept that inspired it.

Unveiled just this month, the Pura Vision was said to provide a glimpse at the design philosophy for all future models, but we didn't expect its design elements to filter down to a production car so quickly.

The B95 - 'B' for Barchetta and 95 for Pininfarina's 95th anniversary - is the company's first coachbuilt car and a new interpretation of a body style that dates back more than a century.

Oddly, open-top vehicles without any kind of weather protection have reemerged as a theme recently, with the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2, Aston Martin V12 Speedster, and McLaren Elva all launching over the past few years.

This Barchetta will be the most exclusive of the lot, as only ten examples will be built, and each unit will be "curated" between AP and the client.

"Our Pura design philosophy has purity at its heart, a hallmark of the timeless designs of iconic vehicles from Pininfarina's past. The Barchetta silhouette is instantly recognizable, but it was our job to make it beautiful," said Dave Amantea, Chief Design Officer, Automobili Pininfarina. "The mixture of classic proportions and exquisite detailing has allowed us to create something truly special. We're allowing customers to drive a dream with B95 - something that defines the brand moving forward."

There's a lot of design to get into, but it's not a complex car. The pronounced wheel arches provide a sense of power and a reflective surface for the panels between the wheels. According to AP, this creates depth and quality in the design.

Our favorite angle is the slightly elevated view from the front. From here, you can see the designers only used four clear lines to provide a muscular body and a beautifully defined cabin.

The B95 comes standard with electronically-adjustable aero screens. This idea was borrowed from vintage fighter planes, and it's AP's solution to the apparent wind-in-the-hair problem. It likely won't be legal in several states in the USA, as McLaren famously had to give the Elva a fixed windshield before it could be sold to customers here.

Even with these aero screens, wind will likely remain a problem. But AP says its clients can order bespoke helmets painted to match the car's exterior.

"The B95 is elegant, bold, beautiful, and innovative. Everything that defines a true Pininfarina design. It will be the perfect celebration of the 95th anniversary of Pininfarina, which has an unrivaled history of creating rare icons that are now the most revered and sought-after collectors' cars in the world," said Paolo Pininfarina, Chairman of Pininfarina SpA.

The launch vehicle is finished in Metallic Bronzo Superga. AP adds a decent amount of gold flake to the paint to give the car a different appearance from day to night. In direct sunlight, it appears to be gold. At night, it takes on a bronze hue. It contrasts beautifully with the Giallo Arneis gloss sections at the front and top of the driver's dome. Black Exposed Signature Carbon provides even more contrast against the gold/bronze exterior.

Finally, B95 has 20-inch front and 21-inch rear forge aluminum wheels finished in Matt Black. The center lock rings are finished in brushed aluminum anodized in black. The brake calipers are also Giallo Arneis.

Basically, it's a two-tone theme. Three if you count Metallic Bronzo Superga as two colors.

Like other roofless cars, the exterior and interior spill beautifully into each other. For the interior, AP wanted classic race car meets futuristic design, which is why the Tan Sustainable Luxury Leather stands out so much. It's a very old-school upholstery for such a modern car. The dashboard is finished in the same material, and, as you'd expect, there's also a decent helping of carbon fiber.

The headrests are finished in Pied de Poule Houndstooth Luxury Textile with black and tan contrast stitching. As a finishing touch, a set of electro-welded Pininfarina logos are added.

Underneath, the Automobili Pininfarina B95 is essentially the same car as the Battista, which has much in common with the Rimac Nevera. It's not the same car, however. According to its maker, the B95 has a unique tune, though it fails to go into further detail.

The quad-motor setup is powered by a liquid-cooled T-shaped 120 kWh battery, which can be charged from 20% to 80% in 25 minutes using DC fast charging. It also inherits the same driving modes as the Battista and Edizione Nino Farina: Calma, Pura, Energica, Furiosa, and Carattere.

Each wheel is driven by an electric motor, and the total power output is 1,874 horsepower. Automobili Pininfarina claims a 0-60 mph time of less than two seconds and a top speed in excess of 186 mph. The Battista was the quickest car in the world for a while before Rimac stole the title away. We have little doubt that Automobili Pininfarina will use the B95 to claim a new set of records for an open-top vehicle.

Deliveries will take place in 2025 to coincide with the 95th anniversary of Pininfarina SpA. The B95 starts at €4.4 million, which, at the time of writing, is roughly $4.8 million.
