China Has Another Awesome Looking EV With 578 HP And Over 400 Miles Of Range

Reveal / 27 Comments

The Avatr 12 is a four-door coupe with lots to like. Alas, we'll never see it on our roads.

China has yet another impressive electric sedan we can't have: it's called the Avatr 12 (pronounced one-two, not twelve) and is born from a joint venture between Changan, CATL, and Huawei, which also produced an SUV model called the Avatr 11.

The Avatr 12 arrives with four-door coupe styling and a large hatch in the back. Similar to a Polestar 5, there is no rear window, instead relying on cameras to replace the rear and side-view mirrors.

Deliveries begin later this year with two drivetrains, rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. The RWD version produces a respectable 313 horsepower, while the dual-motor setup offers an impressive 578 hp. Both setups are linked to a 94.5-kWh battery from CATL.

It's unclear which testing cycle was used, but the Avatr 12 boasts impressive range figures: 434 miles for the RWD model and 403 miles for the AWD version. We imagine that both of these estimates are optimistic given that ranges calculated under WLTP and CLTC are always higher than ones from the EPA test.

Inside, the Avatr 12 gets a truly luxurious cabin equipped with Zero Gravity seats, an Intelligent Windshield with adaptive light-sensing, and a 35.4-inch 4K panoramic widescreen display on the dash. That windshield also goes directly into the roof like a Lucid Air, but unlike the Lucid, the Avatr 12's glass can respond to light and become opaque. Other impressive details include mother-of-pearl wood on the center console and Nappa leather seats.

This car also features an impressive safety roster with 29 sensors, including three LiDAR sensors. These sensors help power the Huawei Advanced Driving System (ADS) 2.0, which uses high-precision maps to aid in highway driving, urban driving, and parking. Hands-free driving is not mentioned as a feature of this system.

No pricing was announced, but we expect the Avatr 12 to be less expensive than its SUV sibling, the Avatr 11. That car was priced at $51,800 (converted from Chinese Yua) when equipped with a 90-kWh battery. Like most Chinese brands, there is no chance Avatr will venture stateside with either of its models.
