Chrysler Airflow Concept Isn't Dead After All

Stellantis' design head honcho explains the plans behind the Airflow concept shown in 2022.

Contrary to previous reports, Chrysler isn't killing off the production-ready Airflow EV concept shown at the 2022 CES.

In an Instagram post, Stellantis design boss Ralph Gilles dispels recent rumors regarding the fate of the Airflow EV concept. The concept, which garnered significant attention for its forward-thinking design and innovative features, was initially thought to have been scrapped based on a report by MotorTrend.

However, Gilles' social media post assures enthusiasts and fans that the project is evolving and that his previous statements were just misunderstood.

Gilles explained that the Airflow's design continuously evolves as the company explores new possibilities under the leadership of Chris Fuell, the brand's CEO, and Irina Zavatski, the vice president of Chrysler Design.

"The Airflow was just the beginning of the story… a North Star type of concept embodying a myriad of concepts we are cooking up with the extended and now even more capable Stellantis apparatus!" said Gilles in the post, which came with a photo of the Airflow from when it was first shown to the public.

Gilles said that electrification remains a key focus and that the company has also been delving into advanced infotainment, whole-life connectivity, and sustainable cabin materials. Fully automated and assisted driving configurations are also on the cards.

The "more capable Stellantis apparatus" that Gilles mentioned could refer to the new STLA Medium EV platform unveiled this month.

The new EV platform, which features a 400-volt architecture and a claimed range of 435 miles, is set to arrive in the US by 2026, underpinning a Chrysler vehicle based on the Airflow concept.

Gilles also confirmed that Airflow isn't the name of Chrysler's upcoming EV. It's more of a theme for the brand amid its transformation, but the final product will differ from what was previously shown. We'll know whether the upcoming Chrysler 300 replacement, allegedly shown to dealers earlier this year, took inspiration from the crossover concept in the years to come.

Gilles reassured the public that all these aspects are currently active work streams within the company, emphasizing that progress has not halted for Chrysler.
