Confirmed: MG Cyberster Dual-Motor Has 536 HP, Hits 60 MPH In 3.2 Seconds

Sports Cars / 10 Comments

The dual-motor derivative has a 77 kWh battery that provides 360 miles of range on the CLTC cycle.

The all-electric MG Cyberster broke cover earlier this year, and while we were taken by its gorgeous styling, the automaker didn't divulge many technical details.

But at the Chengdu Motor Show, additional information has been revealed, giving us a better idea of what to expect. The 77 kWh battery can reportedly deliver a substantial range of 360 miles. Bear in mind that this was calculated on the CLTC cycle, so if the Cyberster were ever to make it to the United States, we can expect a significantly reduced figure.

We previously learned that the electric Cyberster produces 536 horsepower courtesy of dual electric motors. MG has said the torque figure is rated at 535 lb-ft, which is impressive. The 0 to 60 mph sprint was initially expected to take less than three seconds, but the official figure is rated at 3.2 seconds.

In terms of size, the Cyberster is slightly bigger than the Mazda MX-5 Miata. Measuring 178.5 inches from front to rear and 75.3 inches wide, it makes the 154-inch-long/68.3-inch-wide Mazda look even smaller than it is. Owing to the heavy battery pack, the Cyberster weighs considerably more than the 2,332-pound Miata, at 4,079 lbs. 19- or 20-inch wheels will be offered.

The rear-wheel drive single-motor derivative will probably weigh less, thanks to the more compact 64 kWh battery. But with 310 hp on tap, it should still provide a vibrant and engaging driving experience. Just don't expect it to be as fast as the dual-motor derivative. Despite its size, the Cyberster is being touted as a supercar rival, so we expect the pricing to reflect that.

There's a possibility a smaller, more affordable version could arrive in the coming years.

The interior is a work of art. Modern and contemporary, the center console and dashboard are angled toward the driver's side, creating a driver-focused cabin. Gorgeous leather detailing and a large infotainment screen dominate the cabin. The scissor doors are, arguably, the highlight of the cabin and add plenty of flair to an already appealing package. A Yoke steering wheel will reportedly be offered as an optional extra.

We sincerely hope it arrives in America. There's a distinct lack of electric performance vehicles, particularly convertibles. When it eventually comes, the Tesla Roadster is expected to cost around $200,00 - out of reach for most consumers. Porsche is also working on an all-electric Boxster successor, which should be significantly cheaper. Let's not forget that Maserati has an electric GranCabrio Folgore waiting in the wings.
