2025 Mini Cooper Countryman Electric First Look Review: The Multitasking Mini

The new Mini Cooper Countryman Electric SUV has arrived with a fully electric powertrain, new styling, and enlarged dimensions that move it even further away from the philosophy of compact dimensions promised by that iconic badge. With all-wheel drive, it's also more capable than its tinier hatchback sibling, while its more powerful motors deliver keen acceleration. One of the primary advantages of the Countryman is its larger second row and cargo area, but it hasn't forgotten it is a Mini, so there are all kinds of fun features like the circular Interaction Unit that make connecting with the vehicle a more immersive experience. But how "Mini" can it still be considering its bigger size and fully electric powertrain?

When Is The Mini Cooper Countryman Electric Coming Out?

Set to be the first model from the brand to be made in Germany, the exact release date of the Mini Cooper Countryman Electric hasn't been shared yet. We do know that production at the BMW Group Plant Leipzig will start in November 2023, but it's likely that this electric crossover will be coming out as a 2025 model in the USA.

2025 Mini Cooper Countryman Electric Price And Competition

We can only speculate about the price of the 2025 Mini Cooper Countryman Electric since this information is yet to be disclosed. The 2024 gas-powered Countryman starts at $32,650, but as we all know, EVs are typically pricier. We expect the single-motor Countryman E to begin at a cost of $38,000, with the dual-motor Countryman SE ALL4 potentially exceeding an MSRP of $50k when fully loaded.

Considering its larger size, the 2025 Cooper Countryman Electric now encroaches on compact models, too - previously, it was very much a subcompact contender. This would see it in the mix with a wide range of rivals like the Volkswagen ID.4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. However, Mini's positioning as a more upscale brand makes something like the Volvo EX30 a more direct competitor.

New Mini Cooper Countryman Electric Exterior And Colors

Significantly taller and longer than before, the new Mini Cooper Countryman Electric's exterior has more presence than its predecessor. Wider wheel arches contribute to this impression, but Mini has also sought to simplify the details.

Like the much smaller hatchback, the Countryman has short overhangs and a short hood, and it's still one of the most charismatic crossovers you can buy. In front, there is a new octagonal grille design with an integrated radar sensor - this is the first Mini to enable Level 2 semi-automated driving.

New LED headlights are fitted and have a more angular contour than the rounded clusters of the older model. New LED daytime running lights can optionally be equipped with a function that changes up the lighting signature, and an animated welcome/goodbye feature hints at the playfulness of the Mini brand. Eagle-eyed enthusiasts will note that the headlights no longer have a chrome surround. Along the sides, the commitment to a cleaner, simplified look is reflected in the flush-fitting door handles and the black fender flares of the older Countryman have been toned down. The three-part division of the body - a lower section, circumferential window area, and contrast roof - works well, and the appearance can change quite dramatically depending on how it is customized or which of the four trims are chosen.

Eye-catching wheel designs measure up to 20 inches in size, but 17-inch aerodynamic wheels are available to increase range. Moving to the rear of the crossover, the license plate holder no longer stretches across the tailgate and has been moved lower down. Together with the flush rear lights with a vertical orientation, it is once again a cleaner look than before. The Union Jack motif in the taillights is still available.

Regarding colors for the Mini Cooper Countryman Electric, a new shade called Vibrant Silver is available for the contrasting roof. Bright exterior paints like Indigo Sunset Blue are on offer, while the John Cooper Works (JCW) trim has a front grille frame and logo in high-gloss black, red/black hood stripes, and a Chili Red roof. A panoramic glass roof is available as an optional extra.

Mini Cooper Countryman Electric Dimensions

Quite a bit larger than its predecessor, the dimensions of the Mini Cooper Countryman Electric reflect what should be a more practical SUV. Length has gone up by over five inches and height by 2.4 inches. The new Countryman's body now stretches to 174.5 inches, height is 65.2 inches, and width is 72.6 inches. The wheelbase has also grown to 106 inches.

Curb weight specs have not been shared, and that's likely because this is the heaviest Mini ever made, especially the dual-motor all-wheel-drive model. The current plug-in hybrid Countryman weighs over 3,900 pounds, and the new fully electric model will probably come in at over 4,500 lbs.

Mini Cooper Countryman Electric Powertrain And Performance

The base powertrain in the Mini Cooper Countryman Electric consists of a single motor that produces 201 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. This model is known as the Countryman E and it's not particularly quick, with a 0-62 mph time of 8.6 seconds and a top speed of just over 105 mph.

The Countryman SE ALL4 adds a second electric motor and all-wheel drive to produce 308 hp and 364 lb-ft. These much better numbers reduce the 0-62 time to 5.6 seconds and raise the top speed to 112 mph. Gas-powered models of the new Countryman will be available but we review these separately. While it isn't a true hauler, the maximum towing capacity is 2,645 pounds if you choose to spec it with a tow hitch for light-duty trailering.

Mini says that the Countryman Electric will be sporty to drive and also comfortable. It has an increased track width and a longer wheelbase for superior driving dynamics, and a damping system with highly preloaded stabilizers will also contribute to sharp dynamics. In Mini fashion, a direct steering rack is equipped.

Customers will be able to choose a chassis configuration that either promotes comfort or sportiness, and an optional adaptive suspension that lowers by 15 mm will also be on offer. Sports tires can be fitted, too, and the increase in tire diameter aids handling.

A new Experiences toggle switch can change the driving experience, with the Go-Kart mode setting up the suspension for more aggressive driving. Even the steering calibration can be adjusted, while more efficiency-minded drivers can select the Green mode to extend the cruising range.

For the first time, the Countryman is available with Level 2 semi-automated driving at speeds of up to 37 mph. With this, you can enjoy hands-free driving while following preceding traffic. An addition to the Driving Assistant Professional package is the system's ability to help the driver take a right exit and take gaps in traffic.

Range, Charging, And Battery Life

With its new 64.7-kWh battery, the Countryman E has a WLTP range of 287 miles, dropping to 269 miles for the SE ALL4. Once they receive an EPA rating, we expect more realistic range figures between 210 and 230 miles. Those specs aren't amazing, but it should suffice for customers who can invest in a Level 2 charging point at home.

With AC charging, the Countryman EV can be charged at up to 22 kW. DC fast charging is possible at up to 130 kW, which is enough to replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in below 30 minutes. Mini says that the charging time can be lowered by using the active navigation; based on the weather conditions, the system can guide drivers to a fast-charging station that takes into account when the battery reaches its optimal temperature. The Mini App provides information on the battery status and can be used to view a charge-optimized route plan.

Mini Cooper Countryman Electric Interior And Cargo

Just because it's the most practical Mini doesn't mean the Cooper Countryman Electric's interior is devoid of personality. Between the new circular Mini Interaction Unit, emotional Mini Experience Modes, and dramatic ambient lighting, the space has been crafted to get small families to their destination and keep them entertained on the way there.

The center circular display employs OLED technology, and its positioning is a throwback to the classic Mini hatch. As there is no traditional instrument cluster, it also fulfills that role, but you can order a head-up display if you prefer key information in your natural line of sight. The screen is divided into different sections, with the top part displaying key driving information like speed and the lower area for things like media and climate. We expect quick responses as the display runs the latest Mini Operating System 9, with a choice of touch or voice controls.

Optional Mini Experience Modes make use of different lighting colors and patterns, such as Go-Kart Mode with its anthracite and red lighting and sportier displays. Personal Mode lets you upload your own background image for the center screen. Timeless, Green, Core, and Trail are some of the other modes. The "Hey, Mini!" intelligent personal assistant can help you manage telephony, entertainment, and other functions via voice alone.

Not everything in the youthful interior is operated by touch or voice, though, and there's a new toggle bar with quick access to functions like the parking brake, gear selector, and volume. This new toggle bar eliminates the need for a traditional shifter, freeing up extra storage space.

If the many modes don't confuse you, the plethora of trims (Essential, Classic, Favored, and John Cooper Works) and materials just might. The cabin uses attractive new textiles on the dashboard and other areas; the 2D knitted textile is the first use of such a material in a production car. Different trims will change the appearance of the Mini Cooper Countryman Electric's interior. For example, the seats in the Classic are finished in synthetic leather, while the JCW has red stitching for its sports seats.

Being the Countryman, the second row is much more important than in the hatchback. Three passengers at the back will now be more comfortable thanks to additional shoulder and elbow room, while the rear-seat backrest is adjustable in six positions up to 12 degrees.

That brings us to the cargo space of the Mini Cooper Countryman Electric, which starts at 16.2 cubic feet behind the second row. If the rear seat is folded, that number increases to 51.2 cubic feet. The 2025 Countryman Electric has various nooks and crannies inside for small items, as well as enlarged cup holders and a new large storage area below the toggle bar.
