While most Minis aren't known for their practicality, the Cooper Countryman PHEV bucks the trend by supplying not only good passenger and cargo space but also a hybrid powertrain that is not too heavy on the gas. This 1.5-liter turbo three-cylinder and electric motor supply a combined 221 horsepower and 284 lb-ft of torque, which is more than enough to motivate the subcompact SUV, even with a full load. Unfortunately, the premium nature of the automaker, along with a complex engine, makes for a pricey product. This is why the Mini Cooper Countryman Plug-In Hybrid's competitors include the likes of the Lexus UX Hybrid, which it handily beats in the 0-60 mph sprint. It is a bit lacking in the features department, though, and doesn't offer a particularly thrilling drive. So is the unique appearance enough reason to buy one?
For 2023, the Mini Cooper Countryman PHEV receives a new sub-trim special edition in the form of the Untamed Edition. It sports Momentum Grey Metallic and Frozen Bluestone accents on the doors. Two-tone 18-inch wheels with a black roof and mirror caps round out the look. The interior is available with blue and green trimming and Untamed lettering on the seats and other surfaces. The dashboard comes with a backlit paneling picturing a mountain landscape, but you'll need to hurry if you want one - production numbers will be limited.
Other updates to the Countryman PHEV include a reshuffled exterior color palette, new upholstery options for the interior, and active cruise control now becoming a standalone option.

Even as the largest Mini, the Countryman is still small for a crossover, and it feels that way on the road. While it can't compare to the hardtop Cooper in terms of handling prowess, it's spry enough to make urban commutes a breeze. We wouldn't go as far as calling is nippy or agile due to being a lot heavier. But luckily, the 1.5-liter turbo three-cylinder engine gets some help from an electric motor to supply 221 hp and 284 lb-ft, which gets the portly Mini hustling in a respectable time. But going quick is best kept to the straights, as corners will remind you that there is some definite body roll there.
As a crossover, the ride is comfortable, and the interior lends quite a bit from Mini's BMW overlords. It's classy, well-built, and keeps any unwanted hubbub from intruding into the cabin. In review, the Mini Cooper Countryman is a good balance between the playfulness of a classic Mini and the refined poise of a BMW. Just remember that while some dealers may call the Countryman an SUV, it is a town car through and through, so don't try exploring the vast outdoors of the USA with it. Besides, the 17-mile all-electric range would do you no good out there.
NHTSA safety ratings are not available at this time.
Mini refused to be left by the wayside when the world went crossover crazy, and we are thankful for that. The Countryman is an accomplished vehicle, capable of moving people and their stuff and even delivering a thrill or two with its acceleration. The Plug-in variant takes this a step further by also offering a green solution for fans of the premium subcompact; that doesn't mean class-leading fuel economy, though, and some competitors manage much more frugal ratings.
However, what matters most in this segment is practicality and comfort, and the Countryman has them both in spades. The cozy interior complements the suspension well to soak up bumps before they ever make it to the passengers. Meanwhile, the light and precise steering make driving a breeze, and there may even be some wiggle room for having a bit of fun.
There are plenty of crossovers that can do what this Mini does, and many even surpass it in more mundane ways. But if you're looking for a car that matches common sense with a flair for the absurd, much like its cartoonish appearance, you won't find better than the Mini Countryman.
