2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Review: A Phoenix Waiting To Rise

Now quite long in the tooth, the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid should have been a brand-new vehicle already, but instead, it continues unaltered and still lacking in multiple areas compared to rivals like the Toyota RAV4 Prime and Hyundai Tucson. That being said, it's not a bad car. Subaru's standard all-wheel drivetrain gives it good handling characteristics, and it has a very spacious interior, at least for passengers. However, the weak powertrain, limited all-electric drive range, and pitiful towing capacity are well below what we expect from an SUV like this. But, for fans of the brand, the Subaru Crosstrek plug-in hybrid is a unique offering that may be worth consideration.

2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Handling and Driving Impressions

Like every model before it, the 2023 Crosstrek Hybrid boasts an all-wheel drive setup with a fully independent suspension and active torque vectoring, giving it impressive handling. All the while, it delivers a comfortable ride experience, both on and off the road. The raised ground clearance helps with the latter, especially in X-Mode. However, it isn't a car really made for extensive off-road adventuring - it'll do well if you're out glamping or traversing dirt roads. It also lacks enough power to really deliver any amount of fun. Wind and road noise can be a problem, too, once you get up to speed.

Verdict: Is The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid A Good SUV?

If you review it in a vacuum, the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is a decent car. It has an adequate amount of power, good fuel economy, at least 17 miles of all-electric range, and it can go off-road in a pinch. It also handles more like a sedan than an SUV. Finally, it boasts good safety and reliability ratings. But, once you look at what the competition is doing, it becomes clear that the Crosstrek Hybrid just can't keep up. To say it's starting to feel dated is an understatement, especially since the new generation should have arrived this year. Instead, we have a hybrid SUV with poor power outputs, far below-average range, and a price tag that seems out of touch with what is on offer. If you really are a fan of the Subaru Crosstrek, we'd suggest going the non-hybrid route and saving yourself a considerable wad of cash. Otherwise, buckle up and wait for the much-anticipated 2024 model.

What 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Model Should I Buy?

If you really have your heart set on a Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, then we won't tell you not to buy one. On the plus side, the hybrid comes outfitted with all the same tech as the gas-powered Premium, so there isn't much need to upgrade. This is good since you're already paying a lot more for that hybrid powertrain. The moonroof and Harman Kardon sound system may look appealing, but they add $2,500 to an already high bill, so we'd give them a miss.
