2024 Tesla Cybertruck Model Overview: What We Know So Far

It turns out that March 2019 was quite a momentous occasion. Now well over three years ago, that was the last time Tesla revealed an all-new, production-ready car in the form of the Model Y crossover. It wasn't supposed to be this way, of course. The Cybertruck, Tesla's first pickup, was meant to arrive in 2021. A series of empty, jumbled promises from Elon Musk and more revised timelines than we can remember followed, and it's still not here. In the interim, Ford unveiled and delivered the F-150 Lightning, GMC launched the Hummer EV, and Rivian's R1T began rolling off the production line. The Cybertruck promises long range and mega performance when, and if, it arrives. Here's what we know about it so far.

When Is The 2024 Tesla Cybertruck Coming Out?

The 2024 Tesla Cybertruck's release date has been one of the most wildly speculative topics online over the last couple of years. We will not be so foolish as to tell you exactly when it's coming out, but the latest word from Musk is that the release date is scheduled for mid-2023. Despite this statement, Tesla hasn't added delivery dates back onto its website after removing them at the start of 2022.

What’s The Price Of The 2024 Tesla Cybertruck?

Originally, the Tesla Cybertruck's price was said to begin at an appealing MSRP of $39,990 in the USA for the single-motor variant. That seems like an all but impossible number at this point, as even a base Model 3 with a single motor starts at $46,990 following several price increases. The dual-motor Cybertruck was meant to cost $49,900 and the tri-motor version was $69,900. If it does arrive next year, we'd be surprised if the 2024 Cybertruck started at anything below $50,000, but perhaps a basic workhorse version will prove us wrong.

Among rivals, the Ford F-150 Lightning begins at just under $40,000 but goes all the way up to over $90,000.

New Tesla Cybertruck Exterior And Colors

In June 2022, Elon Musk confirmed that the Tesla Cybertruck's exterior design was "finally locked" but we haven't seen much evidence of the wedge shape being comprehensively altered. In late 2019, industry experts said that the angular shape posed massive risks to pedestrian safety. One has to assume that Tesla has toned down the design since then, and it was forced to add traditional side mirrors as required by law.

The basic shape we've seen remains utterly imposing, if not particularly attractive. In the years since the Tesla Cybertruck pickup was first shown, the industry has embraced "regular-looking" EVs more readily, whereas the Cybertruck looks like an alien from another time.

Expect features like in-bed storage, detachable wing mirrors, and ultra-slim LEDs in front, while the brand's armor glass promises high "damage tolerance" - so long as you don't throw a steel ball at it. The Tesla Cybertruck's colors aren't known yet, but the brand doesn't offer outlandish color palettes so will likely stick to the simple blacks, whites, and grays its other models wear. Given the body is supposedly stainless steel, you'll also possibly be able to buy one without paint.

Tesla Cybertruck Dimensions

The Tesla Cybertruck's dimensions may change between now and its official reveal, but based on what we know, it will measure 231.7 inches in length, 75 inches in height, and 79.8 inches in width. Those numbers make it around the same size as the F-150 Lightning.

With its adjustable air suspension, the Cybertruck is apparently capable of approach/departure angles of 35/28 degrees respectively, and it has 16 inches of ground clearance. With a 6.5-foot bed, it will be able to carry payloads of up to 3,500 pounds. If these numbers hold true, it will be a superbly capable electric pickup.

Tesla Cybertruck Engine And Performance

Three derivatives of the Cybertruck will be on sale: a single-motor rear-wheel drive, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and tri-motor all-wheel drive. We don't know for sure how much power they'll make, but the base model will be good for a 6.5-second 0-60 mph time, while the dual-motor version can conquer the same run in just 4.5 seconds. The tri-motor model's specs are phenomenal, with a claimed 0-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds.

It's safe to assume that the range-topping tri-motor variant will produce over 1,000 horsepower, as is the case with the tri-motor Model S Plaid sedan, and that has a lot less weight to carry around. The dual-motor Model S makes 670 hp, so this is around how much power the mid-tier Cybertruck could make. In December 2021, Musk said that a quad-motor Cybertruck would be coming but this remains to be seen.

In its most capable form, the fully electric Tesla Cybertruck will have a towing capacity of 14,000 lbs. Besides this, Tesla promised both a crab walk function and rear-wheel steering.

Range, Charging, And Battery Life

It's unlikely that Tesla will let its reputation for class-leading range suffer, even for a vehicle as heavy as the Cybertruck. The base single-motor version is claimed to be able to cover 250 miles, the dual-motor model will do over 300 miles, and the tri-motor version will be able to cover over 500 miles on a single charge. That last claim sounds quite optimistic for a heavy, large pickup, but it would certainly give the Cybertruck the edge over its rivals. We'll have to wait for MPGe ratings from the EPA.

The Cybertruck will be able to charge at up to 250 kW at a Tesla Supercharger station, which can add around 200 miles of range for a Model S in 15 minutes. That gives us an idea of what the electric pickup should be able to achieve when its battery is fully charged, but again, its weight will likely result in a lower range than the sedan after the same charging time.

Tesla Cybertruck Interior And Cargo

The Tesla Cybertruck's interior has an almost dungeon-like appearance. In case it isn't clear, that's not a compliment. Dark colors, zero physical controls, and sharp lines have created a shockingly stark environment that yearns for some warmth. Without trying to sound like a broken record, the inside of the production model may be more colorful and welcoming, but we don't know this yet.

It should be spacious, though. The Tesla Cybertruck's seats can accommodate six adults across two rows. It appears as though second-row legroom is very generous. If you removed the central 17-inch touchscreen, yoke steering wheel, and pedals, there would be nothing left to discuss, such is the extreme minimalism of the dashboard.

The Tesla Cybertruck's trunk space is quite impressive, with the company promising 100 cubic feet of exterior, lockable storage. These storage places include the frunk, sail pillars, and under-bed storage. The bed itself measures 6.5 feet, and access to it is easier since the adaptive air suspension can be lowered by four inches at the back. A slide-out ramp at the back will make it easier to load motorcycles. Like Tesla's SUVs, cargo space in the Cybertruck will be excellent.
