DRAG RACE: Twin-Turbo Ford Bronco Vs. Dodge Viper GTS

Video / Comments

This is not as one-sided as you think it might be.

When polar opposite cars compete in a drag race, one will usually handily defeat the other. However, this drag battle between a tuned third-generation Ford Bronco and a Dodge Viper GTS is much closer than one would expect.

The epic drag duel between the two gasoline-chugging beasts was showcased in Hoonigan's This vs. That series. While most of this group's races go up to 1,000 feet, most of the runs for this matchup were halved to 500 feet to make things more even, and the competition more exciting.

Before going over the race results, here's the tale of the tape. On the SUV side is the short and stubby third-gen Bronco sleeper powered by a twin-turbo V8 M Block.

Owner/builder Ryan Hauf claims that this tuned Bronco can make 669 horsepower, and it also has four-wheel drive. Sounds like a good contender, but it's a bit hefty at 4,700 pounds. It also has the aerodynamic efficiency of a lunch box, which the Viper has an advantage on.

On the other side is the second-gen Viper GTS. It still has its stock 8.0-liter naturally-aspirated V10. Owner Nick Reid says that it makes 450 horsepower to the crank. It doesn't have mods for the engine, but it does have a lowered ride height, increased airflow to the engine bay, and a titanium exhaust.

The car looks rough because Reid drives it a lot - the complete opposite of the very well-preserved 819-mile Viper GTS auctioned off last month. And unlike the Bronco, the coupe has a rear-wheel drivetrain and weighs much less at 3,300 lbs.

On the first 1,000-foot-long drag race, the Viper smoked the Bronco, especially in the last stretch. In fact, the Dodge sports car gapped the Ford SUV by six car lengths. The shortened second run still went to the Viper, but it was very close as the SUV did pull from a standstill.

The Bronco got more serious for the third take and went off from a standstill significantly faster than its sports car competitor. But this last win was somewhat expected since the Bronco, as per the first few runs, is quicker (quicker being acceleration over top speed) than the Dodge.

The video ended with both the Viper and Bronco effortlessly performing donuts, telling us that despite their contrast in body type, their fun factor was on the same level.
