2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan Review: E Is For Elegance

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is one of the most prestigious executive sedans, trailing not very far behind the acclaimed S-Class. Being a tad smaller, it competes in the mid-size segment with the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6, but it is more opulent than both. However, it isn't quite as sporty or engaging, despite having access to a turbocharged six-cylinder that makes 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. This does give it decent performance that perfectly complements its sumptuous and well-appointed interior; it's as pleasurable to drive as it is to spend time in the rear seats when being chauffeured around town. But, with so many options in this segment in the USA, is the 2023 E-Class Sedan the best of a great bunch?

2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan Handling and Driving Impressions

As is common for almost every Mercedes car, the E-Class Sedan is a luxury executive, first and foremost. It has a good deal of power, that much is undeniable, but it isn't designed to put that to use with corner-bending antics. Instead, the feeling from behind the wheel is that of an effortless cruiser. Acceleration is brisk but steady as you put your foot down, while the steering is light and easy to manage. It gains a little heft as you speed up, ensuring you stay the course while on the highway, but feedback is virtually non-existent. Try to take a corner too quickly, and you'll be reminded just how heavy the vehicle is. Around town, bumps and abrasions are absorbed without fuss, especially if you opt for the optional air suspension, while the highway may as well be a red velvet carpet when you're cruising at higher speeds. The standard suspension isn't quite so buttery smooth, but it does an admirable job.

Verdict: Is The 2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan A Good Car?

Professionals on the fast track to the top have been enjoying the luxury of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class for decades, and the 2023 iteration continues to live up to its legacy. It is gorgeously appointed, both inside and out, with style and status oozing from every pore. But while there is plenty of space for people, the cargo hold is not quite as generous, and some desirable features are left off the standard list, requiring you to add options and packages to an already hefty price tag. The handling and driving experience also leaves something to be desired if you've ever been behind the wheel of one of its German rivals. It still delivers effortless power, though, and the ride comfort can't be faulted at all. For those that place style and luxury above flashy driving, the E-Class Sedan is one of the best options on the market, but you may want to wait a little longer for the imminent arrival of an all-new model.

What 2023 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan Model Should I Buy?

A quick review of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan range shows that you have a choice between two engines and either RWD or AWD for the weaker one. The latter is a moot point since most people with the money to afford this luxury saloon will want the best of the best, that being the 450 4Matic. We'd throw on the panorama roof for $1,000, the Premium Package for $2,290 (includes the Burmester sound system and surround-view camera), and the Driver-Assistance Package for $1,950. The $1,900 adaptive air suspension smoothes out a few of the rough edges found in the standard setup, and this is another box we'd tick.
