"If LEGO and soda cans can do this, so can we," claims Musk in a leaked internal email.
As detailed in an uncovered internal email, Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants the Cybertruck to have the same build quality as Legos and soda pop cans. This email was leaked via the Cybertruck Owners Club, where the two unlikely products were set as examples for their superb build quality.
Tesla came under fire when it posted a photo of the first Cybertruck off the line at Giga Texas. The photo revealed a product with noticeable misaligned doors, made even more visible by the ruler-straight lines of the Cybertruck's design. It seems the furor around this clearly irked Musk, who has claimed that if Lego and soda cans can be manufactured straight, so can the Cybertruck.
"Due to the nature of the Cybertruck, which is made of bright metal with mostly straight edges, any dimensional variation shows up like a sore thumb," said Musk in the email.
As a result, he is demanding sub-10-micron accuracy in the design and manufacturing of all parts. He signs off with, "If LEGO and soda cans, which are very low cost, can do this, so can we. Precision predicates perfectionism."
As one forum user pointed out, this could be a difficult task. Legos and cans are simple, while the Cybertruck, like many cars, is a collection of complex parts. It also doesn't help that the hotly anticipated model already saw a whopping 1.5 million pre-orders when figures were divulged in 2022. Now that number has swelled up to around two million.
Elon also seems to have bold ambitions for a car company famous for poor build quality. Some of the issues faced, like the yoke steering wheel issue, have already been addressed, but some problems persist in select Tesla cars, and uneven panel gaps are something the brand is notorious for.
One commenter pointed out that Musk might have issued the undated email during the start of the Cybertruck development and that the leak happening now is of old mail. Essentially, quality assurance is being pushed into every manufacturing step of the vehicle, similar to what Toyota's production system does.
The Cybertruck is a big project for Tesla. If this high-precision directive being pushed by Elon works, then the brand might finally be able to do away with the doubters. As for us, we'll believe it when we see it.
