Genesis GV80 Coupe Revealed With 415-HP Twincharged V6

The standard GV80 facelift was revealed simultaneously.

  • First-ever Genesis Coupe SUV with unique styling elements
  • Model-specific 20- or 22-inch wheels
  • Standard GV80 has either 2.5T four-cylinder or 3.5T V6 engines (300 hp or 375 hp)
  • GV80 Coupe gets 3.5T V6 with electric supercharger (410 hp/405 lb-ft)

Genesis has unveiled the all-new GV80 Coupe and the facelifted GV80 SUV. The former is the production version of the GV80 Coupe Concept showcased earlier this year, and Genesis says it's meant to embody the brand's design philosophy of "Athletic Elegance."

The front end is similar to that of the standard SUV, but if you look closer, you'll note an expanded air intake and four air vents. These help with cooling, but also differentiate the front of the Coupe from the less interesting traditional model. At the rear, it has a completely unique design with LED lamps and a sizeable auxiliary brake light mounted on the tailgate. A descending spoiler also adds a dash of sportiness.

The most interesting view is from the side, where you can see an arch-shaped Parabolic Line creating a lower roofline. To add even more drama to the vehicle's profile, the Coupe is equipped with model-specific 20- or 22-inch wheels.

The Coupe's interior design is unique to this model, equipped with a two-tone D-cut steering wheel, carbon garnish patterns, and seats with model-specific patterns and stitching. You'll also find metal accents on the foot pedals.

A sloping roofline impacts interior space, but Genesis got around this by changing the layout of the engine compartment. Genesis did not go into details, but it likely created more room in the rear by moving everything else forward by an inch or two. To get around the headroom problem, the rear seats have a reclining function. The trunk is also equipped with a "trunk package" and foldable luggage shelf to keep the car practical.

Prospective customers will have access to six Coupe-specific interior packages, allowing more room for customization.

New e-Supercharged Engine Options

The GV80 Coupe will go up against rivals like the BMW X6 (facelifted earlier this year) and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, so Genesis needed some serious firepower. The GV80 has two engine options, while the Coupe adds a third.

The base engine is a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-pot producing 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. The turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 ramps the output up to 375 hp and 391 lb-ft. The Coupe's model-specific engine option uses the same turbo 3.5-liter V6, adding an electric supercharger to reduce lag - effectively an electric air compressor. The supercharger is driven by a 48-volt system for instant response times, and the power output is 410 hp and 405 lb-ft.

The SUV and Coupe both benefit from an adaptive suspension and the latest engine mounting control system that can detect the state of the road and make tweaks to the setup. Naturally, there are various driving modes, and the Coupe also gets access to a Sport+ mode and Launch Control. To add even more sportiness to the mix, the Coupe has a faux engine noise system that can replicate a "large-displacement sports coupe's exhaust."

Standard GV80 Facelift

While the Coupe is the star of the show, the GV80 also received its first significant tweaks since it was introduced three years ago.

Exterior enhancements include a new Two-Line Crest Grille, larger air intakes, and a wider skid plate on the front bumper. A new chrome strip runs down the side and meets up with a rear end that now hides the car's exhaust tips. There are two new wheel designs, which add a lot of pantomime to the profile.

The interior now boasts a 27-inch OLED display that integrates the digital instrument cluster and the infotainment system. The HVAC controls are now touch-based. As we've come to expect from Genesis, the interior trim elements are genuine leather, wood, and aluminum.

Finally, the layout of the wireless charger has changed. The driver can now see the phone better, and changing the layout also increased the size of the cupholder.

The final specification of these vehicles will likely only be announced closer to their introduction, but we know Genesis likes to throw almost everything in as standard. As such, both cars come standard with a next-generation digital key, a Fingerprint Authentication System, UVC disinfection trays, heated armrests, touch-based handle sensors, a fragrance system, a 14.6-inch rear-seat display for streaming services, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system. Naturally, every advanced driver assistance system you can think of is standard.

The GV80 Coupe and updated GV80 will make their debut at events in the East, and we hope to see both at the LA Motor Show in November. We'll likely receive more information about US-bound models when the duo makes their American debut.
