2025 Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster First Look Review: A Mountain To Climb

With deliveries of the Ineos Grenadier commencing over the pond, the company has introduced its second model: the new Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster pickup truck. Designed to be an exceptional off-roader, just like its SUV counterpart, the Quartermaster adds even more versatility to the package thanks to its open bed. Confirmed for the USA, it enters this country's immensely popular pickup segment. Like the Grenadier SUV, the Quartermaster is powered by a 3.0-liter 282-hp inline-six engine from BMW, while its rigid box-section chassis, impressive wading depth, and ample ground clearance will make it a formidable contender off the beaten path. Whether local customers choose it over a bevy of more established pickups from Detroit's Big Three remains to be seen.

When Is The Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster Coming Out?

Although it was revealed at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, a specific release date for the Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster is unknown. We expect it to be coming out in the second half of next year as a 2025 model. Ineos has confirmed that orders will open here in 2024.

What the price of the 2025 Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster will be in the USA isn't clear yet. In the UK, the starting price of the Quartermaster is £66,215, equivalent to around $84,000 at the time of writing, although that's not necessarily an accurate depiction of what it would sell for here. That price rises even more for the Fieldmaster and Trialmaster. These prices suggest that the pickup will be cheaper than the Grenadier SUV - we know the SUV will start at $71,500 when it arrives here. Expecting a low to mid-$60k MSRP for the Gernadier Quartermaster as seems reasonable.

One of the most obvious rivals for the Grenadier Quartermaster will be the Jeep Gladiator, which starts at a much more palatable $38,990 for the 2023 model but can exceed $60k for a fully loaded version. There are also top-spec versions of the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, and Chevrolet 1500 to worry about. The all-conquering F-150 Raptor starts at $76,775, and it's going to be tough for Ineos to steal customers away from that.

New Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster Exterior And Colors

A clear relation of the Grenadier SUV, the exterior design of the Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster looks like a mashup of the original Defender, the Jeep Gladiator, and the Bollinger B2. That's not to say that the Quartermaster doesn't have its own identity, but its rugged and utterly unpretentious looks fall into the same category as the vehicles mentioned above.

It has the same front fascia as the SUV, rounded headlights featuring LED daytime running light rings, a rudimentary grille, and a protective skid plate with integrated tow hooks. A raised air intake will be available to take full advantage of the pickup's wading depth of 31.5 inches.

As with the pickup, Trialmaster and Fieldmaster trims will be available, with the base model being a blank canvas for customers to customize as they see fit. The Trialmaster will be the most extreme off-roader of the bunch, while the Fieldmaster is a slightly more refined take on the Quartermaster.

The Quartermaster's cargo area can be equipped with a sturdy frame and waterproof canvas canopy, or a lockable roller tonneau cover will be available. Jerry cans, ladders, and shovels can also be hoisted onto a roof rack. These are just a few options and accessories that should mirror the SUV's.

Although specs for US-bound Quartermasters are yet to be released, we expect it to come with the same 17-inch steel or 18-inch alloy wheels as the SUV, depending on the trim or selected options. Bridgestone all-terrain or BFGoodrich K02 tires will be available.

Based on the UK-spec models, we can expect load bay utility rails, rock sliders, a LED lightbar, a recovery kit, a removable rear winch, quick release tie-down rings, and load bay cross-bars - not all of these are standard, however.

Available colors for the Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster will likely be the same as those available for the Grenadier SUV, including the standard Scottish White. Magic Mushroom, Britannia Blue, Sela Green, and Shale Blue are some extra-cost colors that should be available.

In its transition to a pickup truck, the dimensions of the Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster have increased in some ways compared to the SUV. The wheelbase, for instance, is up to 127 inches - a full 12 inches more than the Grenadier SUV. At 214.1 inches, the length of the pickup is shorter than a Ford F-150, which stretches to over 250 inches in some configurations. The 2025 Grenadier Quartermaster has a width of 76.5 inches without the mirrors and 84.5 inches with the mirrors included. At 79.5 inches in height, this is quite a tall pickup.

At 5.1 feet, the length of the Quartermaster's box is shorter than even the smallest 5.5-foot box on some F-150s; other variations of the Ford have 6.5- and eight-foot boxes. In this regard, the Quartermaster can't match the most popular pickups in the USA.

With its gas engine, the Grenadier Quartermaster truck has a curb weight of 5,875 pounds. This is the weight for the UK-specific model, but the US one is likely to be similarly heavy. There is an even heavier diesel-powered version, but this engine choice is unlikely to make it stateside.

A healthy 10.4 inches of ground clearance should serve the Quartermaster well in off-road environments, as will approach/ramp breakover/departure angles of 35.5/26.2/22.6 degrees, respectively; the SUV has better angles to work with here, thanks in part to its shorter wheelbase that is better for off-roading.

Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster Engine And Performance

The same 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged engine in the Grenadier SUV should be equipped to the Grenadier Quartermaster. This is the highly respected B58 mill used in multiple BMWs and the Toyota GR Supra, but in the Grenadier, it's tuned to make a more modest 282 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. There is a diesel alternative for UK buyers, but this is unlikely to be available in the USA.

An eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF transfers power to the permanent four-wheel-drive system. In the SUV, this equates to a 0-62 mph time of 8.8 seconds and a top speed of 99 mph; the Quartermaster pickup shouldn't be too far behind. The maximum towing capacity works out to 7,716 lbs.

Between its solid beam axles that provide excellent wheel articulation, heavy-duty coil suspension, and center differential lock, the Grenadier Quartermaster will be a superb off-roader. The Trialmaster also gets front and rear differential locks to deliver optimized traction across the most challenging obstacles, and these can also be equipped to the other two trims. When the custom-made two-speed transfer case is switched to low range, the vehicle delivers greater torque at slower speeds. Underride protection and rock sliders protect important components, and the Wading Mode will switch off the engine fans.

Ineos quotes the same 18.9-19.6 mpg rating for the Grenadier Quartermaster as it does for the Grenadier SUV. However, in terms of local EPA ratings, you should expect 15/15/15 mpg city/highway/combined and 1 mpg less across all cycles for the tough Trialmaster variant.

The 23.7-gallon gas tank will result in a range of between 332 and 355 miles, and while 87 octane gas can be used, 91 octane is preferable.

As with its styling and engine, the interior of the Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster shares much with the Grenadier. The cabin is a case of function over form, with the cliff-like dashboard containing more knobs, switches, and buttons than you'd find in almost any other new vehicle. There is also an overhead panel with even more switches for managing functions like differential locks.

The advantage to this layout is that many functions can be adjusted quickly when on the move or when you are negotiating a tough trail and don't have time to delve into a touchscreen interface. The switches can also be operated when wearing gloves. But for some settings, there is still a 12.3-inch LCD color touchscreen that allows access to Android Auto, wireless Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and the navigation system. It appears to be a successful marriage of old-school functionality with new-age customization.

A conventional five-seater truck, the seats in the Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster will probably have the same upholstery options as the SUV. That would mean a standard mix of Recaro cloth and vinyl, ideal for wiping the interior clean without fuss. Leather upholstery will be available, and all models should have the SUV's Nappa Leather Driver's Pack with its handbrake grip, steering wheel, and instrument panel grab finished in Nappa leather.

Standard features for the Quartermaster pickup will include automatic climate control, cupholders, and second-row vents, while rear park assist, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking will give drivers some peace of mind.

Ineos hasn't supplied cargo space specs for the Grenadier Quartermaster, but as we've mentioned, the rather short bed will be more limited in what it can accommodate compared to other full-size pickups in the USA. We do know that the Quartermaster has a box height of 19 inches, not too far off the 21.4 inches of the Ford F-150. And, at 63.7 inches in width, the loadspace width is reasonable. However, the placement of the spare wheel inside the bed will drastically reduce total cargo space. Finally, the maximum payload is 1,840 lbs.
