2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe First Look Review: Coming Out Swinging

Earlier this year, Genesis teased us with the GV80 Coupe Concept and said it served as a statement of intent - and true to its word, the new Genesis GV80 Coupe SUV has just been revealed in Korea. Our sources tell us it's likely to come to the USA to join the growing list of midsize coupe-styled crossovers and SUVs that strive to merge practicality with sexier styling. In this case, the 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe arrives on the scene with an arsenal of tricks, not the least of which is an available 3.5-liter engine with an electric supercharger that makes 410 horsepower. But is it enough to take on heavy hitters like the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X6?

When Is The 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe Coming Out?

Nothing has been said about a release date for the Genesis GV80 Coupe, but we've been told it should make its way stateside, likely later in 2024. Both the 2025 GV80 Coupe and its facelifted SUV sibling could make an appearance at the LA Motor Show in November, and more information will probably be shared then.

2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe Price and Competition

With no concrete confirmation of US-bound models, the price of the 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe is very much still up in the air. The 2024 Genesis GV80 SUV goes on sale at a starting MSRP of $57,450, and coupe models are likely to cost a little more. Premium rivals like the BMW X6 start near the $75k mark, which is a few thousand dollars over what the X5 costs. It's safe to assume that the GV80 Coupe will have a base price somewhere in the mid-$60k region.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe is also a luxury competitor in the coupe-SUV category, but these models cost a lot more to start with ($89,800). On the plus side, the Merc GLE Coupe has 429 hp on tap. If that's just too much money for you, consider the 348-hp Porsche Cayenne Coupe that costs about $5k less than the Merc. Genesis would be smart to position its coupe SUV under or around the $70k mark to lure buyers away from the competition.

New Genesis GV80 Coupe Exterior and Colors

The latest Genesis products have already upped the ante in terms of looks, and the 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe takes that one step further. Although the front end is familiar and quite in line with the standard GV80 SUV, there are some changes to set it apart. This includes an expanded air intake, active Air Flap, and four air vents - these also function to improve engine cooling. The MLA-powered LED headlamps with signature split headlights and dual-layer Crest Grille are elegant and bold declarations of style.

The side profile shows off the new GV80 Coupe best since the Parabolic Line that traces an arch along the body clearly highlights the sloping roofline. Model-specific 20- and 22-inch wheels with distinctive spokes also help the coupe SUV to stand out from its more traditional sibling.

Of course, the rear is very different from the regular GV80, and while it's not as futuristic as the concept, it retains the contemporary shape of the concept car, including the centrally descending spoiler. The LED taillights mimic the split design from the nose of the vehicle.

As for exterior colors, the Genesis GV80 Coupe will be available in 13 hues - at least in Korea. We'll have to wait and see what the US-spec versions offer, but it's likely that the exclusive Bering Blue will remain an option.

Genesis GV80 Coupe Dimensions

The automaker hasn't revealed the dimensions of the Genesis GV80 Coupe or its facelifted SUV counterpart. Current measurements for the SUV can be used as a guide, however. The 2024 model has a 116.3-inch wheelbase and a total length of 194.7 inches. While the regular model is 77.8 inches in width and 67.5 inches in height, we can expect the new GV80 Coupe to be slightly lower to the ground.

Curb weight for the 2024 GV80 lineup starts upwards of 5,000 lbs, and the 2025 range will probably follow suit, with the supercharged mill being the heaviest configuration.

Genesis GV80 Coupe Engine and Performance

Genesis says there are three powertrain options for the GV80 Coupe, with the first two already in use on current GV80 models. The base engine is a 2.5-liter turbocharged unit with 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, and one step up is a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 with 375 hp and 391 lb-ft. Both have been paired to an eight-speed automatic up until now, and that's not likely to change. All-wheel drive will be standard on all models.

For those who want their coupe-styled SUV to be even more potent, the 3.5T engine can be had with an electric supercharger that's driven by a 48-volt motor for outputs as high as 410 hp and 405 lb-ft. And while no claims have been made about top speed or 0-60 mph times, the existing V6 engine has gotten the SUV to 60 mph in around 5.7 seconds in independent tests. We'd wager the new Coupe model, with its potent supercharged mill, will drop that a little closer to five seconds.

Features that are exclusive to the GV80 coupe include Flex Brake and the Sports+ driving mode. The former allows drivers to customize the brake pedal responsiveness to their liking, while the latter - alongside such systems as Launch Control on the supercharged engine - is perhaps the biggest indication that Genesis wants a piece of the performance coupe-SUV pie.

A variety of mechanical bits and bobs, including Preview Electronic Control Suspension and the second-generation Engine Mounting Control Unit, work together to ensure a smooth and stable ride.

Gas Mileage

Since the same engines we're used to seeing on the GV80 do duty on the Coupe, too, we can assume the current EPA figures will remain relevant. These are 20/24/22 mpg for the city/highway/combined cycle with the base 2.5-liter engine, while the V6 earns 18/23/20 mpg for the Genesis GV80 SUV. Of course, the supercharged engine available to the new Genesis GV80 Coupe won't be more efficient.

Historically, a 21.1-gallon fuel tank has been standard on the GV80 range, but whether that carries over to the Coupe model remains to be seen.

Genesis GV80 Coupe Interior and Cargo

The interior of the Genesis GV80 Coupe is based on the facelifted cabin of the new GV80 SUV, which is a great improvement on an already excellent product. The dashboard is now dominated by a 27-inch OLED display that integrates the driver information cluster with the infotainment screen. The setup looks simple and uncluttered, and even the hard controls and dials lower down on the center console look easy to use.

The shifter knob has been redesigned and rendered in a crystal-like material with a focus on comfortable grip, elevating the elegance of the cabin like the Orrefors crystal gear shifter on upper-tier Volvos. The Coupe also gets metal accents on the pedals for reduced slip during driving.

As we love to see in Genesis products, there are swathes of leather, aluminum, and real wood around the cabin, and the Coupe model features a flat-bottomed two-tone steering wheel with carbon garnish patterns. The seats in the Genesis GV80 Coupe get model-specific patterns and stitching, and the rear passenger seats can recline. We'd bet Nappa leather is the standard fare. Interior colors for the Genesis GV80 Coupe (at least for Korean models) include five themes with three new options - namely, Earth Brown, Bordeaux Brown, and Glacier White.

Part of the facelift for the 2025 Genesis GV80 range includes more features and safety tech than before. Four-zone climate control, Digital Key 2, fingerprint authentication, heated armrests, and a fragrance system are listed as standard features. A 14.6-inch rear-seat display and a Bang & Olufsen sound system are also available.

As for safety, ten airbags, a digital rearview mirror with rear-view feed and hands-on-the-wheel detection are part of the safety suite. The ADAS system has been upgraded, too, with the latest version of lane following assist, forward collision avoidance, blind-spot collision avoidance, rear cross-traffic assist, and highway driving assist are just a few of the standard features.

For the sake of convenience, the cupholders have been enlarged and there is an improved wireless charging pad that allows you to keep an eye on your phone while you're charging it. As for cargo space in the trunk of the Genesis GV80 Coupe, we don't have official specs, but it won't be as much as the SUV version (34.9 - 84 cubic feet on 2024 models), thanks to that sloping roof. But an optimized trunk package and foldable luggage shelf are standard to make it as convenient as possible.
