Honda's American History Immortalized In Free-To-Access Museum

Established in 1959, American Honda was the first Honda company outside Japan.

In celebrating its rich history in the US, Honda has opened the doors to the new American Honda Collection Hall. Located in the main lobby of American Honda's headquarters in Torrance, California, this 20,000-square-foot display offers a trip down memory lane through more than six decades of Honda and Acura's legacy in the US.

The hall features over 60 historic and significant vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, power equipment, race machines, engines, and concept models. These exhibits showcase the Hondas that made a mark since its establishment in 1959 as the first Honda company outside of Japan.

Some notables in the exhibit include the first Honda automobile sold in the US, the 1970 Honda N600 Coupe. Powered by an air-cooled 600 cc 2-cylinder engine, its retail price was just $1,395, or around $10,990 in today's money when accounting for inflation. You will never find a car priced that low today.

A classic Honda Civic Hatchback from 1975 is also on display, which was the first car to meet the 1970 US Clean Air Act's emission standards without a catalytic converter. Then there's the 1985 CRX Si, the first performance Honda Si model sold in the US. And, of course, the 1991 Acura NSX - a respected mid-engined sports car still popular among enthusiasts.

"Our new American Honda Collection Hall reflects the important connection between the dreams and passion of Honda associates and the joy experienced by customers who love their Honda products and racing fans thrilled by our checkered flag successes," said Noriya Kaihara, President & CEO and director of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., and chief officer of Regional Operations (North America).

"Everyone at Honda is honored to share the expressions of our history in America that are on display in the form of products and technology that have helped move people and society forward."

Motorcycle enthusiasts will be delighted to see classics like the 1969 Honda CB750A, known as the first superbike, and the iconic 1962 Honda 50/Super Cub, one of the first three models Honda introduced in the US. Even Honda motorsports icons, such as the 1997 Acura Integra Realtime, are on display. Made as a collaboration between RealTime Racing and the legendary Acura Integra Type R, it cemented a race-winning record for over two decades.

While it's launched with a bang, the American Honda Collection Hall will be updated several times yearly to keep the theme fresh and showcase other historic machines. The exhibit is open to the public, free of charge, during scheduled "Cars, Bikes & Coffee" events every third Saturday of every other month, starting on October 21, 2023.

The inaugural event will host products and special activities, such as giveaways, special displays, vendors, food trucks, and music.
