Infiniti QX Monograph Concept Previews New QX80

Concept / 21 Comments

Infiniti unveils a concept car that looks almost production-ready, giving us a clear idea of what the next QX80 will look like.

On the lawns of Pebble Beach, Infiniti has revealed its latest concept with the name QX Monograph. While it has some outlandish styling cues, the majority of the design appears to be production-ready, a common theme for Infiniti's Monograph concepts. In this case, the design previews what we can expect from the next Infiniti QX80 SUV. The brand's senior director of operations, Bob Welby, told us as much in February, but it's safe to assume that many of the styling cues introduced or refined on this concept will make their way to other production Infiniti models in due course.

With that in mind, let's see which of these new design elements are likely to be seen in dealerships before long and which are just there for some extra pizzazz.

The QX Monograph concept sees the first application of Infiniti's newly redesigned logo, revealed in June. Here, it features a three-dimensional effect and has been illuminated in white. The logo appears within another new design update, namely the double-arch grille, which has taken inspiration from a bamboo forest. This appears in gloss black and features a dark chrome surround, with a front fender vent on each side mirroring this theme.

On either side, new headlights update the "digital piano key" lighting signature with the daytime running lights separated from the lower headlights mounted in the bumper. At the rear, the smoked taillights run the full width of the body. These feature a complex inner housing that is meant to invoke an image of light reflecting on water. Naturally, both front and rear lighting units are animated with welcome and farewell sequences.

While we're on the subject of animated light, the concept casts a path of light on the ground as part of its welcome sequence. This takes inspiration from a bird in flight, mimicking the movement of wings. Also worth a mention are the massive turbine-inspired wheels, which are machine-finished and boast red accents on gloss black and shadow chrome spokes. Red also appears in the glasshouse, with the windows lightly tinted to complement a new six-layer paint finish called Akane. This color-shifting paint aims to capture many of the hues seen during sunset, while a panoramic roof with a "Kimono fold" pattern lets natural light in.

We suspect the roof may be simplified on the production car, and the paint would likely only be a special-order option. The wheels may be a bit too detailed for production, but other than that, this looks like a dead ringer for the next QX80. What doesn't make production here may be seen on other products, with four new models expected by 2027.
