Jaguar Becomes Latest Automaker To Adopt Tesla's NACS Charger

Jaguar has just become the latest automaker to announce a switch to NACS (North American Charging Standard), the charging plug used by Tesla.

What started with an announcement from Ford has now ballooned into a rapid influx of automakers abandoning the previously established CCS standard. Only a handful of automakers are still clinging to the CCS standard, but we think it's just a matter of time.

This news comes at an odd time for the British brand. The company's only EV, the Jaguar I-Pace, is living on borrowed time and will likely be killed off. Jaguar says its agreement with Tesla will begin in 2025, with all new models sold in the United States, Canada, and Mexico having access to the Supercharger network without needing an adapter. In the meantime, Jaguar will "source adapters from Tesla" once they are available and supply them to I-Pace owners.

"JLR is dedicated to helping our clients make the switch to electric vehicles and to our commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2039. Today's announcement is an important step as we deliver an outstanding charging experience for our all-electric Jaguar clients," said Mark Camilleri, Director of Electrification Services, JLR. "Whilst most charging takes place at home, when away from home, our clients want access to fast, reliable, and convenient chargers. Tesla has created a charging network across the globe that delivers this, and we are delighted to be working with them to provide access for Jaguar clients."

When the NACS charge port is integrated into future Jaguar vehicles, it will support V3 and V4 Supercharging, meaning they could deliver 350 kW charge speeds.

Of course, we still have no idea which Jaguar vehicle will be the first to receive the NACS connector. Jaguar will become an electric brand by 2025, launching new models with more advanced technology. Jaguar was one of the first luxury automakers to launch an EV, but the I-Pace is now lagging behind because it has made no substantial upgrades to the car since its introduction.

Jaguar will offer a "curated range of electric hybrid and full electric models" that are "a copy of nothing." Rumors suggest the lineup could include an XJ successor previously believed to be canceled, but nothing is confirmed.

Though the press release doesn't mention it specifically, we can assume that future Land Rover EVs will also ship with NACS when they finally arrive.
