Jeep Wagoneer And Grand Wagoneer May Be Losing V8 Engine

It probably won't be missed.

It appears the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will be losing their standard 5.7-liter V8 engine, which will be replaced with the Stellantis' Hurricane inline-six. Car and Driver discovered a fleet order guide for the 2024 Wagoneer, and the inline-six is the only engine option mentioned. It's interesting, especially considering Stellantis' earlier comments that it would not replace the V8.

Furthermore, the 2024 EPA fuel consumption estimates for the Wagoneer only show figures for the Hurricane engine, while the 6.4-liter V8 is still listed under the Grand Wagoneer. The 6.4 V8 is the only engine option available in the base Grand Wagoneer, while the high-output inline-six is standard fitment in top-spec models. You can put the 6.4 back under the hood at no additional charge, however.

UPDATE: CarBuzz contacted Jeep for comment, but Jeep was only willing to state that it will announce what's new for the 2024 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer later in the year.

Would Jeep be bold enough to drop the famous 5.7-liter naturally aspirated V8 from the Wagoneer range? It would make sense. The top-spec Wagoneer Series III is only available with the Hurricane motor, and Jeep never even bothered offering a V8 option for the long-wheelbase Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L.

The Hurricane engine makes a lot more sense when you compare it to the old-school V8. In the Grand Wagoneer, the naturally aspirated V8 engine produces 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, while the turbocharged inline-six provides 510 hp and 500 lb-ft. The Wagoneer's V8 has 392 hp/404 lb-ft on tap, while the detuned Hurricane engine beats it with an impressive output of 420 hp and 468 lb-ft.

The six-cylinder's peak torque is also available from 3,500 rpm (3,950 rpm in the V8), making it better suited to relaxed commuting and off-roading.

In its most fuel-efficient setup (Wagoneer, rear-wheel drive only), the Hurricane engine consumes 17/24/20 mpg city/highway/combined. The best you can hope for with the V8 is 16/22/18 mpg city/highway/combined. Honestly, the only thing you'll be missing out on is the noise, which you can't hear all that well because the latest luxury Jeeps are so well-insulated.

If we had to guess, most buyers opted for the Hurricane engine as soon as it became standard fitment on the mid- and top-spec variants. The online configurator still lets you put the 5.7-liter V8 back in certain Wagoneer variants, but we can't see the average reasonable buyer going that route, which is most likely why Jeep axed it for good.

The Hurricane will eventually be offered as an option in the 2025 Ram 1500, and Dodge is currently testing a Challenger Drag Pak with the inline-six. All things considered, it's just a better all-rounder.
