Lando Norris To Race IndyCar Stars In Vintage McLarens At Sonoma Raceway

Including F1 cars that carried Ayrton Senna, Niki Lauda, and Lewis Hamilton to various Championship victories.

Fans of Lando Norris and McLaren will get the opportunity to get up close with the British F1 star a week ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix (provided you don't see him in Texas before then) and witness him racing a slew of classic McLarens alongside McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown and McLaren IndyCar drivers Pato O'Ward, Alexander Rossi and Tony Kanaan. In particular, the cars will be a selection of nine of McLaren's most iconic F1 and Can-Am race cars driven by greats like Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna, and Sir Lewis Hamilton.

The event in question is the Velocity Invitational at Sonoma Raceway, running from November 10-12 in California's Wine Country, and will form part of McLaren's 60th-anniversary celebrations.

These celebrations have seen the racing teams run celebratory liveries at several races in honor of founder Bruce McLaren. The collection of cars will be the largest collection of heritage cars run in an event by the company, and it could likely have been even larger had McLaren not been forced to sell heritage collection cars to fund fixes to the Artura.

The cars include Can-Am racers like the McLaren M8D-3 from the 1968 Can-Am season, Niki Lauda's 1984 Championship-winning MP4/2A-1, Ayrton Senna's MP4/6-10 that gave him his third and final Drivers' Championship, and Lewis Hamilton's Championship-winning MP4/23A-05, which won him his first title in 2008.

That's the same title Felipe Massa is trying to get legally overturned.

The full vehicle roster includes:

  • M7C-1
  • M8D-3
  • M23-5
  • M26-2
  • MP4/2A-1
  • MP4/2B-3
  • MP4/6-10
  • MP4/14A-04
  • MP4/23A-05

"Velocity Invitational offers a unique opportunity for automotive enthusiasts to witness firsthand the performance, innovation and excellence that defines McLaren Racing," says Zak Brown. "It's a celebration of our rich heritage and an invitation to experience the intersection of speed and history up close. We're excited to be part of it this year, celebrating our 60 years as a racing team."

Other festivities at the event will include the Mustangs vs. Minis enduro race (which is hilariously fun watching overpowered classic Mustangs blast down the straights, only to be comprehensively out-cornered by classic Minis), classic cars, modern hypercars, and various popular vintage racing groups.
