LEAKED: 2024 BMW M5 Has A Beefy Rear End

Leaked / 17 Comments

The next-gen iteration could be unveiled later this year for the 2024 model year.

After a series of camouflaged spy shots, we are seeing what could be the next-generation BMW M5 (codenamed G90), albeit the rear end only for now. The first look was shared by user ChargedUp on the i5Talk forum, with the performance-oriented midsize sedan looking beefier than ever.

In comparison to the current M5 (F90), the alleged next-gen M5 comes with more intricate body panels that give the car a muscular stance. The taillights are slimmer, while a convex finish on the rear side area further emphasizes the vertical reflector.

The striking detail at the back is the protruding exhaust surrounds in black. They house the pair of twin-tip exhausts similar to the smaller next-gen M siblings including the M2, M3, and M4. However, unlike the current model, the one pictured has separated exhaust surrounds, with the middle portion painted in body color.

Apart from a sports sedan body style, the new M5 is also expected to be available with a wagon version (codenamed G99) as evidenced by a few spy shots taken in Munich, Germany. Taking into account the beefy and muscular styling suggested by the first look image, that could also be the go-to for the M5 Touring.

Stateside enthusiasts would be delighted to know this long-roof version is being considered to make a US debut.

In terms of powertrain, the next-gen M5 could borrow the plug-in hybrid twin-turbo V8 from the BMW XM. A hybridized powertrain would help the nameplate retain running with eight cylinders instead of downsizing to the inline-six S58 engine (used by the M2, M3, and M4) amid stricter emission standards.

For reference, the base XM produces a combined output of 644 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque.

Now that the current M5 is no longer listed on BMW USA's website, the M5 G90 and G99 could just be around the corner. Reports suggest the next generation iteration could be unveiled later this year for the 2024 model year.
