Lotus Emeya Could Spawn 900-HP Wagon Variant

Electric Vehicles / 6 Comments

The Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo might not be in a class of one for very long.

As a Porsche Taycan rival, a wagon version of the Lotus Emeya may be the perfect contender against the long-roof electric Porsche, the Taycan Sport Turismo.

Autocar asked Lotus design chief Ben Payne about the possibility of an Emeya in estate form. He declined to confirm whether it was in the product plan, but his comments suggested there was certainly demand for it in some circles.

"Let's just say I know a lot of creative people that these kinds of products appeal to," Payne said. "The design team is always looking at the next opportunity and how we can do something a bit different and get more [opportunities]. Is it in the product plan? I can't comment on that."

The statements relate to Lotus commercial boss Mike Johnstone's comments about the brand's willingness to adapt to the ever-changing demands in the market.

As such, the rumored Emeya wagon could still happen if sufficient demand for the long-roof model exists.

If that version ever comes out in the metal, it can upend the Taycan Turbo S Sport Turismo in terms of overall output from its electric motors. For reference, the Emeya can generate up to 905 horsepower -154 more than the top-of-the-line Taycan Turbo S Sport Turismo, which makes 751 hp. However, Porsche is planning a big Taycan facelift, with a rumored Taycan Turbo GT expected to hit four-digit power outputs. There's every possibility this powertrain could be shoehorned into the Sport Turismo too.

Lotus claims the Emeya can go from 0-60 mph in a blistering 2.8 seconds, thanks to its full-time all-wheel-drive setup - 0.2 seconds slower than the Taycan Turbo S. We can expect the same comparison between the supposed Emeya wagon and Taycan Turbo S Sport Turismo, given that the latter has the same acceleration rate as its sedan version.

The electric performance wagon segment doesn't have a lot of competitors, so the fight between Lotus and Porsche in this niche could remain between the two if the Emeya wagon were to become a reality. Tesla and Lucid currently have no plans to join the segment. There are, however, conversions such as the first Model S Shooting Brake released in 2018.

Then again, this is still up in the air at this point given no solid confirmation from Lotus. The Emeya will be sold solely as a four-door sedan (at least for now), with pricing expected to be at par with rivals from $75,000 to $135,000. Lotus is expected to commence production in 2024 and should arrive in the US as a 2025 model.
