2023 BMW M4 Convertible

The BMW M4 Convertible adds the flexibility and glamor of top-down driving to one of the great German sports coupes. And, perhaps to drive home the message that the drop-top should be taken as seriously as the coupe, the M4 Convertible only comes in more powerful Competition guise. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six gas engine that produces 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, this car does not lack power or performance and comes with a similar level of dynamism and technology as the standard M4. Making it even more appealing is that direct competitors for the BMW M4 Convertible are practically non-existent. Audi doesn't sell an RS5 drop-top, and there is no replacement for the V8-powered Mercedes-AMG C63 Convertible in the USA yet. Porsche will charge you a lot more for the base 911 Carrera Cabriolet, and although that is the dynamic benchmark, it isn't as practical as the BMW. All of which means that the M4 Comp is a unique and thrilling drop-top at this price point.

There is only one M4 Convertible, and it's the Competition with xDrive. It comes with a starting MSRP of $89,700, excluding the destination and handling fee of $995. Expect the overall price to increase substantially when you kit it out with your choice of exclusive paints or additional packages.

The M4 Convertible might not have a roof, and its curb weight is higher than that of the M4 Coupe, but that doesn't mean that this car doesn't know how to entertain. With BMW's excellent xDrive all-wheel-drive system being equipped as standard and enough power to tow a Boeing 747, the M4 Convertible delivers a blast of performance and driver enjoyment that is hard to fathom. Turn into a corner, and the nose happily follows wherever you want to go.

The AWD system holds on for dear life but can be set to be more RWD-biased for tail-happy action. Corner-exit grip is also fantastic; this beast rips out of bends like a BMW out of hell. We do wish that the steering provided more feedback, but it's well-weighted and precise. An added bonus of having the roof down is that the exhaust note of that inline-six is amplified to the heavens. In town, the new BMW M4 Convertible is comfortable enough for daily driving, and it is a refined cruiser on the highway.

The BMW M4 Convertible risks stepping on the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet's toes, a car that is better suited to enthusiasts but isn't as spacious as the M4. However, if you're not a big Porsche fan, then this is about as good as it gets. The BMW loses little of the driving prowess offered in the standard coupe but gives you that wind-in-the-hair freedom that just can't be replicated in a coupe, even if it's the hardcore CSL version. The build quality is impressive, and besides a rather complicated digital dash, this car is as easy to drive on a daily basis as it is through your favorite set of canyons. All you need to do now is choose a cool set of sunnies.

There is only one model, but it's worth looking at some of the options. As mentioned earlier, we'd have an Isle of Man Green exterior with the full black alloys. It goes nicely with the Kyalami Orange and Black interior. Remember, with the top down, people are going to be looking inside, so you might as well treat them. As for optional packages, we'd have both the Driving Assistance Professional and the Executive Package. They're reasonably priced, and you might as well if you're already spending more than $80k on a car. We'd add the neck warmers, but that's about it. Our build total comes out at $91,545, all-in.
