Maserati MCXTrema Is A Track-Only MC20 Variant With 730 HP

Reveal / 4 Comments

This is what happens when Maserati takes the gloves off for a no-rules, track-only supercar.

  • Track-only model limited to 62 units, all sold out
  • Nettuno twin-turbo V6 produces 730 horsepower
  • Usage limited to private test sessions at tracks around the world

At this year's Monterey Car Week, Maserati has revealed to the world what it can do when it builds a race car with no rules; meet the Maserati MCXtrema, effectively the Maserati GT2 racer, if it didn't have to comply with regulations to compete. That's because this doesn't have to compete, despite being a track-only supercar. Based on the Maserati MC20, this is a track toy for the 1%, akin to the Pagani Huayra R or Gordon Murray T.50s. It's perhaps a step further than even the Ford Mustang GTD.

The mid-engined hypercar has seen the wick turned all the way up here, generating 730 hp from its 3.0-liter twin-turbo Nettuno V6, although just how this has been achieved has not been disclosed. That power is directed to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential racing gearbox and a self-locking mechanical LSD, where sticky race tires help it rip around corners and deploy the full might of the hot-vee motor.

Formerly known as Project24, it was no secret the MCXtrema was in the works. Weight has been stripped wherever possible, to the tune of a 551 lbs diet compared to the MC20 road car. Additionally, it gets double-wishbone suspension, adjustable racing dampers, adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars, and carbon ceramic brakes from Brembo. Naturally, Maserati will help you tune it all in your private track sessions.

Despite not being sanctioned for any racing series, the MCXtrema complies with full FIA race safety, featuring an FT3 31.7-gallon fuel tank, an FIA-grade fire extinguisher, and a safety roll cage. It's not just a solo experience, either, as you get two racing seats. You can, however, opt for a passenger seat removal.

With an adjustable pedal box, six-point racing harnesses, adjustable steering column, in-car telemetry, adjustable ABS and traction control, and a carbon fiber wheel, it's a real racing machine... except it has air conditioning, because Maserati buyers shouldn't have to sweat it out on track like the plebs.

Maserati describes the MCXtrema as a spiritual successor to the MC12, a racing car capable of passing on that car's legacy and inspire the brand's future racing production.

"Maserati MCXtrema was created with the aim of offering an incredibly exclusive product that can set a new paradigm for our track cars," Davide Grasso, Maserati CEO. "The project is dedicated to a selected clientele who are particularly attentive to distinctive details, ranging from the most refined and innovative design to exceptional performance. MCXtrema embodies the sporting spirit typical of Maserati's DNA, a declaration of a new pathway for our brand, devoted to superlative manufacturing and able to stand out in the world of luxury engine production with uncompromising performance."
