New Acura NSX Previewed By Electric Vision Supercar

The design has all the drama we'd expect from a high-performance halo car.

Acura's appearance at Monterey Car Week was expected to be all about the new ZDX and ZDX Type S, but in a surprise move, the automaker also revealed a much more dramatic EV it calls the Acura Electric Vision Design Study.

With its supercar proportions, this Electric Vision could become a legitimate successor to the hybrid NSX that went out of production almost a year ago.

Acura said the Electric Vision explores the next step of its Precision Crafted Performance design language as the brand transitions into an all-electric future.

The Electric Vision was penned by the Acura Design Studio in Los Angeles, and its powerful proportions and dramatic neon green lighting have created something special, unlike any other model in the manufacturer's lineup.

The profile of the Design Study is that of a mid-engined (or should we say, "mid-motor"?) supercar with lots of concept-like details. The wraparound windshield seems to be extraordinarily long as it flows into the hood area, and there is an abundance of sharp angles at the back - and also a full-width light bar. It's hard to make out any traditional headlight clusters, and the rearview mirrors appear to be camera-based.

"Our Acura design team in Los Angeles is dreaming up the future of Acura Precision Crafted Performance in the EV era," said Dave Marek, Acura executive creative director. "This latest expression of an all-electric high-performance model is inspiring everyone in our studio to push the boundaries and we wanted to share the fun with our Acura fans."

Acura said nothing else about the Design Study, so we don't know what its performance capabilities could be or how many motors it has. If it goes into production, however, we can safely assume that this will be Acura's quickest model ever.

Last year, Honda teased two electric sports cars, one of which looked very much like a new NSX. However, that concept's profile was different from the Design Study we see now, without the latter's exaggerated haunches.

As further proof that the Design Study could go into production, Acura vice president and brand officer John Ikeda strongly hinted that a third-generation, fully electric NSX was in the pipeline.

If that's the case, it would mean that every generation of the NSX would have a distinct powertrain, from ICE (first generation) to hybrid (second generation) to fully electric (third generation).
