New BMW X5 Protection VR6 Sounds Like A New Engine But Is Something Else Entirely

Have you ever thought your X5 needs to withstand AK-47 bulletfire?

BMW has revealed the new X5 Protection VR6, which shows that bulletproof vehicles can be sporty while providing armor-plated protection against weaponry up to an AK-47.

The 2024 BMW X5 Protection VR6 has almost the same exterior look as the standard BMW X5, based on the enhancements made during the recent facelift, like narrower headlights, a revised kidney grille design, and a new front bumper. But what most eyes can't see is that the vehicle is integrated with armor protection that meets Germany's Vereinigung der Prufstellen fuer Angriffshemmende Materialien und Konstruktionen (VPAM) standards.

BMW claims the X5 Protection VR6 is designed to offer "outstanding protection under armed attack." The X5 Protection VR6 can also be used as a support vehicle for the bulletproof BMW i7 electric sedan.

Behind these refreshed panels, formed steel panels and safety glass protect occupants without resulting in a differentiated design. This is because the X5 facelift was conceptualized with the Protection VR6 model in mind. The reinforced panels of formed steel are found behind the doors, side frame, roof, and bulkhead, while an armored partition for the trunk provides protection from shots directed at the car's rear. Underneath, an aluminum splinter guard adds another layer of protection.

As standard, the X5 Protection VR6 has a self-sealing fuel tank that prevents fuel loss in the event it is pierced by a shot.

That's in standard form, but more protection is available, with the underbody and roof being the areas you can upgrade - presumably to protect from blasts underneath or shots from helicopters and rooftops above.

At the heart of the X5 Protection VR6, you'll find the brand's S68 V8 engine, a 4.4-liter hot-vee twin-turbo V8 with 48-volt hybrid assistance. This is inherited from the X5 M60i and generates 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic gearbox and standard all-wheel drive help propel the armored SUV from 0-62 mph in 5.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 130 mph - electronically limited. It's unclear what the weight penalty is for its armoring, but it is a full 1.8 seconds slower to 62 mph, although the top speed remains the same.

To compensate for the weight, model-specific adjustments have been made to the chassis and accompanying control systems. It features Sport brakes and adaptive M suspension Professional (optional on standard X5), incorporating as standard the M Sport differential and rear-axle steering. Active roll stabilization is also included to help manage weight transfer when cornering.

Other unique features for the armored model are found in the form of a heated windshield and side windows, an external intercom system, and an additional control panel for the new features. Additionally, the X5 Protection VR6 can be fitted with flashing LED lights in the radiator, at the rear, and on the roof, plus an acoustic signaling system and support for digital two-way radio. Lastly, flag poles allow dignitaries to proudly display where they're from or wave a white flag in surrender.

The stealthy X5 Protection VR6 will debut at Munich's upcoming 2023 IIA Mobility show alongside other BMW vehicles, including several EVs.
