2024 Polestar 5: What We Know So Far

Just three years ago, Polestar's presence was limited to just ten markets globally; this will triple by the end of this year. There are already 30 Polestar sales points currently in the USA. There's a reason for this rapid growth in popularity, considering the Volvo-born automaker's electric vehicles are synonymous with high quality, impressive features, and cutting-edge technology. And the new flagship four-door GT aims to tick each of those boxes with its impending release next year.

A prototype of the Polestar 5 was shown at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2022 with the expected resemblance to the Precept concept on which it's based. But more than just a futuristic look, the Polestar 5 will be a car for the enthusiast driver, with sporty handling and rapid acceleration. Sure, it's more niche than its Polestar stablemates, but it's designed to meet rivals from established luxury brands head-on, and we have reason to believe it will be quite a showdown. Here's what we've gathered so far.

When Is The 2024 Polestar 5 Coming Out?

A release date for the Polestar 5 hasn't been set in stone yet, but we know it will go into production late in 2024, with the first few deliveries tipped before the end of that year. Speculation suggests that it will be coming out in limited numbers at launch, with full production kicking in for 2025.

What's The Price Of The 2024 Polestar 5?

Not much is known about the price of the 2024 Polestar 5, but we're expecting base models to cost under $100k to be competitive with rivals like the Audi e-tron GT with its MSRP of $104,900. Naturally, top-tier models will be pricier. Both the Porsche Taycan and Lucid Air are cheaper, with starting prices in the $80k ballpark, while the Tesla Model S ranges from around $90k to almost $110k for the Plaid.

New Polestar 5 Exterior And Colors

Although it's based on the striking Precept concept, the production Polestar 5 has a few changes that set it apart, including a larger lower air intake and a raised hood. It also has conventional side mirrors and front-hinged rear doors (as opposed to the Precept's rear-hinged back doors), with 21-inch wheels that fill the arches. The sleek and sporty four-door GT clearly focuses on aerodynamics, with sharp lines and an angular theme making it instantly recognizable. It sits low and wide and has short overhangs. Up front, the Thor's Hammer design is familiar, even with the split-headlight design. As with many other EVs, there is no traditional grille.

There's no word on whether specific exterior colors can be expected for the Polestar 5, but it's likely that hues we've seen on the Polestar 3, like Magnesium, Snow, Thunder, Jupiter, Midnight, and Space, will make the cut as no-cost options, with special colors at a surcharge.

Polestar 5 Dimensions

Since the new Polestar 5 sedan's specs are still under wraps, we can only surmise what measurements will apply to the full-size luxury sedan. The likely dimensions for the Polestar 5 will be similar to the Precept, with a 122.5-inch wheelbase, a length of over 200 inches, and a width of approximately 84 inches.

Curb weight is anyone's guess, but given its size in relation to the existing Polestar 2 sedan, we can expect it to tip the scales at well over 5,000 lbs.

Polestar 5 Engine And Performance

The Polestar 5 is marketed as a high-performance electric 4-door GT with "proper sports car credentials," according to the manufacturer. Polestar is aiming for specifications that support this claim, with a targeted 872 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque from its dual-motor setup. The automaker goes on to say that the dual-motor powertrain will be sensational, featuring an all-new rear electric motor and 800-volt architecture. Speculation is that the Polestar 5 may dispatch the 0-60 mph sprint in just over two seconds; by way of comparison, the Tesla Model S Plaid, with over 1,000 hp, gets it done in a hair under two seconds.

Rapid acceleration isn't the only aim, however, and the Polestar 5 is tipped to be at the head of the segment in terms of ride and handling, if not the quickest or most powerful. It boasts a brand-new bonded aluminum chassis with no welds to emulate the torsional rigidity of much smaller sports cars. Not only will the stiffer chassis benefit handling, but it's said to have safety benefits too. With dual-chamber air suspension and active dampers, we can also expect a comfortable ride when not hooning it.

Range, Charging, And Battery Life

There are no official figures just yet, but we know the targeted range is between 370 and 400 miles, which would put it above the e-tron GT and within striking distance of the Tesla Model S. We'll have to wait to see what the confirmed range is when the 2024 Polestar 5 is officially revealed, though.

We're likely to see bi-directional charging capabilities and architecture supporting level 2 and DC fast charging - this implies a 10% to 80% charge in about 20 minutes at a 250 kW maximum charging speed. That 800-volt architecture will, like the Taycan, improve the Polestar's overall charging speed.

Polestar 5 Interior And Cargo

The interior of Polestar products are always a highlight, with high-quality materials, solid fit and finish, and understated elegance and comfort being hallmarks of the brand and its Volvo parent. And, while we don't know exactly what the Polestar 5 cabin will look like, the Precept concept gave us insight into the ultra-digital vibe the brand is going for. To this end, a nine-inch gauge cluster and a 14.5-inch touchscreen in the dashboard are reasonable expectations. We've also been prepared for unsupervised highway driving in the Polestar 3, and since the 5 will be the flagship, even bigger and better things are expected. Driver attention monitoring, three-zone climate control, LiDAR technology, and a top-end Bowers & Wilkins audio setup should be standard.

Seating inside the Polestar 5 could follow the Precept's four-seater layout (with two captain's chairs in the second row) or have a standard bench seat with the individual rear sports seats as an optional extra. What we can expect as standard is the use of sustainably sourced materials for more than just the seats in the Polestar 5 - the MicroTech leather and wool featured on the seats and carpets in the Polestar 3 are likely to be used here, too. Whatever unique fabrics and hides are used, they're bound to feel good to the touch and provide comfort while looking elegant. Interior color schemes for the Polestar 5 will probably be demure and tasteful.

We'll get figures for cargo space in the Polestar 5 in due course, but with two cargo areas - a traditional trunk and a frunk up ahead - the electric GT is likely to be relatively practical to boot. Like Volvo, Polestar is likely to incorporate thoughtful touches in terms of small-item storage, too. After all, ergonomics and an uncluttered cabin are characteristics of the Swedish powerhouse.
