It's a whole new generation for the Land Rover Range Rover Sport, and the hybrid version is getting just as much attention as the base model, if not more. It benefits from all the same stylistic updates, but the brand-new six-cylinder plug-in hybrid setup is where the real fun is. The powerful engine, mated to an electric motor, puts out an impressive 434 horsepower, and the 31.8 kWh battery pack sees it carry the SUV for up to 48 miles on electric power alone. With Land Rover-assured off-road credentials thanks to a solid 4x4 drivetrain, as well as a luxurious and well-appointed cabin, the Range Rover Sport Hybrid SUV is poised to take the fight to other hybrid midsize SUVs like the Volvo XC90 or Lincoln Aviator while we wait for an EV version in 2024.
Like the gas-powered version of the 2023 Land Rover New Ranger Rover Sport, the Hybrid has been totally redesigned. With new styling that brings to mind the fresher Velar, the Range Rover Sport is sleeker and more aggressive than ever. But it's not just about looks, as the Sport Hybrid powertrain is new after a hiatus for the 2022 model year. This 3.0-liter inline-six comes mated to a 141-horsepower electric motor and battery pack, developing a combined 434 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque. It also boasts an all-electric range of 48 miles.

Though slightly smaller than its flagship sibling, the Range Rover Sport is just as poised on the road. A high driving position imbues those behind the wheel with a certain degree of confidence, and the liberal smattering driver-assistance features ensures peace of mind. Meanwhile, the standard-fit air suspension delivers a ride that is buttery smooth around town while still being capable of tackling rougher terrain.
It's this versatile nature that makes the Ranger Rover Sport Hybrid so desirable. A good all-electric range and comfortable ride make it great around town, while multiple driving modes and rear-wheel steering allow it to go where no town SUV would dare. There is a Dynamic mode, too, which tightens up the throttle responses to make the large and heavy vehicle feel a bit livelier.
There is definitely enough power on tap, and the steering is light and precise, meaning that spirited driving is possible. There is even a certain amount of feedback to make a driver feel more engaged. However, the Land Rover is, at its core, a refined city cruiser that prioritizes comfort above all else. This is further emphasized by the excellent noise-dampening inside the cabin.

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport Hybrid does so many things that you might expect it falls short in one or two areas. And while there are a couple of things that could be improved upon, like the finicky infotainment system, the luxury SUV has everything you could possibly want. It has loads of power but also excellent efficiency thanks to its plug-in hybrid powertrain, as well as competent handling and a standard four-wheel drivetrain that delivers excellent traction both on and off the road. The 48-mile all-electric range is nothing to sniff at, especially in the current socio-economic climate. Inside the cabin, quality materials abound and there is even enough space for a third row of seating, though it's not suitable for adults over anything but the shortest of trips. This also eats into already barely average cargo capacity, so it seems best to treat the Range Rover Sport as a five-seater. The only other area we can really find any complaint with is the infotainment, which can be a bit slow and clumsy, especially when you're driving. In review, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport Hybrid is a solid pick in a highly competitive segment, and while it may be more expensive than the competition, it is more versatile while never sacrificing the key features that earn it a slot among such prestigious company.
