BMW EVs May Soon Be Powered By Rimac Battery Tech

Industry News / 2 Comments

Rimac is developing advanced battery cells with EVE Energy, and BMW stands to benefit from it.

Rimac Technology has partnered with EVE Energy, a Chinese manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries, for battery cell production in Europe. EVE has been a leading force for the 46xx cylindrical cell format that enjoys multiple advantages over other battery types; "46" refers to the diameter of the cylindrical cells in millimeters, with the "xx" denoting an unspecified height.

Tesla's own 4680 batteries, as equipped to more recent Model Y crossovers, have been praised for lowering costs. Rimac Technology wants to tap into this benefit for its 46xx platform, creating high-performance batteries with customizable configurations. Rimac is already eyeing projects with large European OEMs to use this platform. Who those OEMs are hasn't been confirmed, but the Porsche connection is one of several possibilities. Rimac Technology has also worked with Koenigsegg and Aston Martin previously.

The partnership with EVE Energy was formally initiated recently at the IAA Mobility event that was held in Munich, Germany. Production of these new batteries is scheduled to begin in 2027, with EVE responsible for the cell manufacturing and Rimac taking care of the development of a battery module and pack platform to accommodate the cells. Besides the advantages already mentioned, cylindrical cells also have superior thermal management, making EVs safer and more reliable.

There is one potential downside to Rimac's partnership with a Chinese battery manufacturer, however. Last year, it was announced that BMW struck a deal with EVE Energy for its Neue Klasse vehicles. At the time, we noted that this could negatively impact BMW's ability to qualify for local tax incentives due to the China-sourced batteries. However, BMW may now stand to benefit from Rimac technology in the long run.

Of course, Rimac is a high-performance brand with record-breaking models like the Nevera. Its 46xx platform and high-performance batteries will likely go into pricier, more expensive EVs where the implications of not qualifying for tax credits are less worrying than they would be for buyers shopping in entry-level segments.

"EVE Energy is one of the largest primary lithium battery manufacturers worldwide and brings a lot of experience in battery cell technology to this partnership," said Mate Rimac, founder and CEO of the Rimac Group. "Its dedication to advancing lithium battery solutions aligns perfectly with our vision of transforming the electric vehicle and energy storage sectors. We're thrilled to announce this collaboration that secures a long-term reliable partner for our 46xx platform."
