RUF CTR3 Evo Is An 800-HP 911 GT2-Aping Longtail

Reveal / 4 Comments

Standard 911 Turbo not fast enough for you? RUF's latest (and most powerful) creation makes it look slow.

RUF Automobile unveiled its most powerful model so far: the CTR3 Evo. It's another step up from the CTR3 based on the 997 911 GT2. As the Evo in its name suggests, it's even more potent than the already ridiculous 775-horsepower CTR3.

The German manufacturer (never call it a tuner) says the power has been increased to 800 hp at 7,100 rpm and 730 lb-ft from just 4,000 rpm. That's more power than any new Porsche currently available. Upgrades to the engine include dry-sump lubrication, a camshaft adjustment with valve timing and lift, direct fuel injection, and a new engine management system.

RUF claims the Evo can get from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and to 125 mph in 9.2 seconds. The top speed depends on the gear ratios, but the highest speed claimed is 235 mph.

Just like one doesn't simply march into Mordor, one can't shove an 800-hp flat-six in the rear of a 911 and expect it to work.

That's why this particular creation has a long tail, a fixed wing, and a set of fat rear wheels. The rear wing deploys automatically, though RUF didn't say at what speed.

The CTR3 Evo's body is made from a Kevlar composite, making it lighter than the standard GT2. At the front, it has a McPherson-strut setup, while the rear (where all the power goes) has a multi-link system with horizontally-opposed coilovers. RUF even went through the trouble of making the inboard coilies (reducing unsprung weight) as handsome as possible. If you lift the rear deck, you're greeted by an immaculate engine bay covered in naked carbon fiber.

You wouldn't want to bin such a lovely work of art, so the CTR3 Evo has a carbon-ceramic braking setup with 15-inch rotors and six-piston calipers, and ventilated and perforated ceramic composite brake discs. Bosch's latest ABS 8.0 is also included as standard.

The interior has several luxury and racing car-inspired elements. On the luxury side, we have a full leather interior, Alcantara roof liner, carbon fiber inserts, a cup holder, lightweight Kevlar carbon seats, and an LCD display that functions as a permanent rearview camera.

On the racy side, you get a fire extinguisher, lightweight door panels with storage bags, and an aluminum shift knob. It also comes with an integrated roll cage.

Our favorite design elements are the analog displays for the RPM, speed, oil pressure, oil temperature, coolant temperature, and tank capacity.

The way it's built is extremely cool. RUF uses the front end of a 997 and marries it with its in-house designed and built monocoque. The rear frame is a tubular construction that supports all the mechanical and suspension components mentioned earlier. Thanks to that elongated backside, the CTR3 Evo is technically a mid-engine RWD supercar.

Overall, it looks like a wicked supercar, especially in this Laguna Seca Blue. That being said, the rear is too familiar. We like the Wolverine-like claws on the lower portion of the bumper, but there's a bit of Lotus Exige, Noble M600, and even Ferrari F50 in the design.

The CTR3 Evo debuted at Monterey Car Week alongside another new creation called the Spyder R. If you'd like to see them, the event officially kicks off on Friday, 18 August.
