2023 Audi S5 Convertible

The 2023 Audi S5 Convertible is an executive tourer with attitude - a much-needed attitude in a segment of other premium convertibles that are historically leaders in the class. This drop-top German exec shares its 3.0-liter, 349-horsepower V6 engine with the S5 Sportback and S5 Coupe, but the soft-top 2023 S5 brings a bit of flair to the party. For the 2023 model year, customers in the USA will be pleased to know that the S5 now comes with an improved sound system in higher trims and some attractive new options, but is otherwise its usual brilliant self. It might not be the most thrilling of cars to drive, but it's quick, good-looking, and tech-rich. The Audi S5 convertible puts up a strong fight against competitors such as the BMW 4 Series Convertible and its 382-hp M440i, but is this elegant cruiser tough enough to take on other German powerhouses?

Adding the letter 'S' to any Audi means enhanced performance, and the new Audi S5 Convertible shines when it comes to taking corners and cruising on the highway. It must be said from the outset that the S5 Convertible isn't as rigid and responsive with the roof down, but that's to be expected. This iteration of the convertible has the stiffest chassis to date, and most drivers will be perfectly happy with how it feels. The turbocharged V6 is more than adequate, with 349 hp and 369 lb-ft on tap that allows it to sprint when you ask it to, or cruise comfortably if you're in a more laidback mood. The eight-speed auto works well here.

Thanks to Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system, grip is immense, and corner exits can be a whole load of fun, but pushed to its limits, the S5 will show signs of understeer. We wish there was more steering feedback for those who seek out connection in a car, but it's still a brilliant cruiser. The available adaptive damping suspension on the upper trims adds even more capability. If you're the type that wants to go fast with minimal effort, this could be the car for you.

The S5 Cabriolet is a polished package that manages to tick the boxes for comfort, performance, and drop-top thrills. The engine is potent, and driving the S5 Cabriolet is almost effortless. The cabin is a lovely place to spend time, and the list of features and driver assists is substantial; while there is no official safety review for the S5 Cabriolet, the NHTSA scored the similarly-specced 2022 A5 Sportback highly. So what could there be to dissuade you? The regular A5 Cabriolet is just as good, albeit less powerful, but it comes substantially cheaper for those who simply want to enjoy languid cruises around town. But we're particularly fond of the S5's ability to do many things well instead of just focusing on one area. If you've got the budget, you won't regret it.
