The one-of-two 412P sold for a record-setting $30.25 million.

Our list of most expensive Ferraris ever sold will need to be updated after this sensational 1967 Ferrari 412P Berlinetta sold for a record-setting $30.25 million at Bonhams 'The Quail Auction' last weekend.

Th V12-powered Ferrari 412P Berlinetta was intended for privateer customer racing teams in the 1960s. It belongs to the Prancing Horse brand's P series, revived by the 499P, which uses a hybrid V6 like the 296 GTB.

Only two examples were made; the one that just sold at the Monterey Car Week (chassis 0854) was originally delivered to Maranello Concessionaires, owned by Colonel Ronnie Hoare, in the spring of 1967.

The team immediately took the 0854 to compete at the World Sportscar Championship, entering races such as the 1,000 Kilometers (621 miles) of Spa and 24 Hours of Le Mans. It also secured wins at the 1968 Nuremberg 200 km (124 miles), the Solituderennen at Hockenheim, and the Swedish Grand Prix.

In 1968, Hoare decided to withdraw his team due to "adverse regulation changes", and racing driver David Piper acquired the 412P. However, it did not take long before he sold the car to a US owner, Chris Cord of Philadelphia, in 1969.

Since then, the ownership has been passed to several proprietors in Japan and the United Kingdom. In 2005, the previous owner restored the 412P to its 1967 form, bringing back the original bodywork, including the numbered expansive tail section and doors.

With nine years of restoration, the car retains the number-matching chassis, engine, and transmission. Still road-legal, the 412P Berlinetta uses a 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated V12 engine with 420 horsepower at 8,000 rpm. It also comes with four-wheel disc brakes, unequal wishbone independent suspension with coil springs, an anti-roll bar, and a 5-speed Ferrari manual gearbox.

With a price tag of $30,255,000, the new owner can now boast of owning the sixth most expensive Ferrari ever sold and the fourth most valuable Ferrari ever sold at auction. The 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO (chassis 4153GT) tops the list at $70 million, followed by another 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO (5111GT) thar sold at $52 million. The list continues with the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO (chassis 3413GT) at $48 million, another 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO (chassis 3851GT) at $38 million, and the 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti at $36 million.
