2023 Nissan Titan XD Review: Chasing After The Big Kids

The 2023 Nissan Titan XD continues on in the face of strong competition from the Ford F-250, Chevy Silverado 2500HD, and Ram 2500. This is despite the fact that it has failed to inspire consumers of its capabilities alongside these class leaders. It may have the rugged good looks of a potent work truck, but the only engine on offer is a V8 gas unit that makes 400 horsepower and 412 lb-ft of torque. This puts it at a distinct disadvantage, as it can only tow around 11,000 pounds. On the plus side, it has better handling than your average heavy-duty truck, and it delivers a pretty smooth ride, too. The price of the 2023 Nissan Titan XD isn't overly intimidating, but it also might not seem like good value for money to consumers who want their truck specifically for hard work.

2023 Nissan Titan XD Handling and Driving Impressions

Large pickup trucks aren't known for their nimble handling, though they seldom lack the power needed for so-called spirited driving. The 2023 Titan XD has a potent V8 and can get up to speed in a relatively short time for such a large car, but it slows down significantly when towing a load. The steering is a bit heavy and makes the unwieldy car tricky to manage, but a set of strong brakes help to inspire confidence in the driver. Aside from the experience of driving, the ride quality of the Titan XD is good, and this is an area where Nissan's truck outshines many of its rivals. But if this is something you care about, a light-duty truck would be a better choice and still manage to tow just as much as the Titan.

Verdict: Is The 2023 Nissan Titan XD A Good Truck?

It is tricky to objectively review the Nissan Titan XD. It definitely has some good features, including good looks, a pleasant riding experience, and a decent list of standard features. However, it is impossible to overlook that it markets itself as a heavy-duty pickup truck, and that has very specific connotations in the USA. Pulling heavy loads, going off-road, and generally being dependable are essential in this regard, and the Titan tries its best to do it all. This attempt to tick every box is a double-edged sword that is slightly too sharp on the wrong side, cutting back the truck's appeal to true aficionados in the segment. The fact that it can barely pull more than the most capable light-duty trucks while still commanding a full heavy-duty price tag makes it difficult to recommend.

What 2023 Nissan Titan XD Model Should I Buy?

Every Nissan Titan XD is identical in terms of capabilities, with only their list of features differentiating them. Luckily, the truck is well-appointed, to begin with. This means that the S trim should be sufficient for most buyers, though the SV adds a little extra at not much additional cost. The Platinum is a significant step up in both features and price, so only diehard fans should consider it. However, if off-roading is your chief goal, the Pro-4X is worth a look, since it adds a Bilstein off-road suspension and rear locking differential.
