US-Bound BMW M5 Wagon Spied In The Wild For The First Time

Get ready, America; this one's for us!

The BMW M5 Touring will return - this was confirmed last month, along with a teaser of a camouflaged version of the upcoming beefy 5er. That same prototype has now been spotted while testing in public, and our spies were there to give us a closer look at the long-roof M5.

According to our spies, the M5 Touring prototype was caught testing in Munich. Unlike the i5 Touring prototype we saw before, the M5 wagon has a beefier stance, complemented by more defined bumpers, side skirts, and wider wheel arches. The concealments do a great job of hiding the elements on the front fascia, though a closer look shows the bigger openings on the front bumper and the oval fog lamps on the corners.

M-specific exterior components, such as narrower side mirrors, a bigger roof spoiler, and the four tailpipes sticking out at the rear, are seen. There are roof rails, too, adding utility to the already practical high-performance wagon.

Meanwhile, the glossy black wheels don't appear to be production-spec, and are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tires. Yellow-painted brake calipers peek through the wheels, too.

The body color of the prototype, which appears to be Isle of Man Green, is seen through the peeled sections of the camo wrap, giving us a hint of the initial color options for the upcoming M5 Touring. The rear doesn't provide many clues, but a quick glimpse at the new 5 Series sedan should preview what the taillights would look like.

Exact powertrain details are scarce, though BMW has already confirmed with the official teaser that a hybrid power plant is coming for the M5 and, consequently, the M5 Touring. A BMW insider shared with CarBuzz that engineers were told to "just imagine what [the XM Label Red drivetrain] would feel like in a smaller package," and M boss Frank van Meel told us that BMW would never develop a powertrain for a single model, all but confirming the XM's powertrain in the M5.

The twin-turbo 4.4-liter hybrid system could produce the same 738 horsepower as the high-powered SUV.

But perhaps the biggest news is that there's a huge chance that the M5 Touring is coming to America. BMW M boss Frank van Meel told CarBuzz that there's a demand for the long-roof M5 in America.

"We listened to our dealers and our customers, and they're coming more and more, asking for a Touring. So, we are taking that into consideration," van Meel said.

Expect the BMW M5 Touring to be unveiled later this year for the 2024 model year, most likely side-by-side with the new M5 Sedan.
