Volkswagen Will Launch 11 New EVs By 2027

Volkswagen is doubling down on EVs, announcing one more model by 2027 than was originally planned.

Volkswagen has revealed that it intends to introduce 11 new electric cars by 2027, one more than was originally planned, reports Automobilewoche. "By 2027, we as a brand will be bringing eleven new electric models onto the market," said CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Thomas Schaefer. He made the announcement ahead of IAA Mobility, otherwise known as the Munich Auto Show, where Volkswagen will publicly unveil its new ID. GTI Concept, a preview of what the Golf GTI of tomorrow is expected to be like.

Electric cars are still characterized by several shortcomings, so these new products will have to be very good if VW wants to retain its loyal customer base.

Volkswagen's decision to launch more new EVs than first planned is not a surprise, given how much has been invested in the automaker's new SSP electric platform. The more products it can extract from the architecture, the greater the economies of scale become, and the more profitable the automaker's electric endeavors will be. Volkswagen is working hard to reduce costs across the board, but despite several challenges in this regard, Schaefer says that VW will not be drawn into a price war.

"We don't take part in price wars," said the CEO. "In my experience, buying market share through price is not sustainable."

Some may see this as cause for concern, but Schaefer has faith in the strength of the brand and expects things to improve in the near future. "We assume that the share of electric cars in Europe will increase significantly in the coming years," said Schaefer, adding that the current drop in popularity of its offerings is no more than an "intermediate low."

We know that Volkswagen has plenty of new vehicles in the works, and we've even uncovered the names of many of these future products. While it's nearly impossible to predict which of the combustion-powered cars in VW's range will be first to be killed off, it's clear that the Golf will become an EV, and most other new arrivals will likely be crossovers and SUVs.
