But what could it be?
Volkswagen has released a series of teasers alluding to the introduction of a new model in the coming days. Posted to the official Volkswagen News Twitter account (or would that be X account?), the first of the three posts has a close-up video of a rabbit (the animal) sitting in a field. "The internet is full of [cats]. Everyone likes cats. We like them, too. But today, we want to honor the rabbit - for good reason," reads the caption.
In the top right corner, a countdown clock shows the reveal of this mystery model was seven days away at the time of posting (two days ago).
Of course, the first-generation Golf was marketed as the Rabbit in the United States and Canada, as "Golf" was considered too upmarket for the youthful, budget-conscious audience VW was trying to attract. The Rabbit name was selected to reflect its compact size and agility but was dropped for the second-generation model. However, it did return for the fifth-generation model.
The second teaser (embedded below) may provide some sort of clue. "Do you also have a garage where you work on your car? We've been in the garage working on a very special vehicle. More information to follow soon," it reads. This suggests that we could be about to see the restoration of an early Rabbit model, but we wouldn't rule out an altogether new concept either. A special edition is also possible, like the one we received in 2018.
In 2022, the company built the ID.Xtreme concept, a 382-horsepower off-roader, for its fans at ID. Treffen. This reveal took place in September, so we could get a one-off concept based on the current Golf GTI or Golf R this year. There's also the possibility that VW will show off an electric concept that takes cues from the original Rabbit.
As for the last teaser, Volkswagen shared a short clip containing a jar of honey. The caption reads: "We produce not only cars and curry sausages, but also honey. Our little bees are now on their way to Munich, so that they arrive in time for the big reveal." While our gut feeling is that we'll see a restomod, the mention of bees could point to something with an environmental focus.
Either way, it's clear that the unveiling is to take place at the IIA Mobility Munich 2023 show, which will commence on September 5. The event has previously been used to showcase new vehicles and concepts. However, the countdown clock on the latest teaser shows five days to go, which would be Sunday, September 3. Most likely, the vehicle will be revealed online and its public debut will take place a short while later at the show.
We'll keep an eye out for any more confusing teasers. Perhaps they'll make more sense than the current batch.
