Volvo And Polestar Buyers Have More Entertainment Options Than Ever

Technology / 9 Comments

The benefit of a fully connected infotainment system is its integration with dozens of services.

A movie streaming service is set to debut in Volvo and Polestar cars equipped with Google built-in, specifically in the form of Amazon Prime Video. While movie and TV streaming apps - like Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, etc. - can already be integrated into some head units through "jailbreaking," these apps remain an aftermarket job rather than an official service offered off the factory - until today.

Unlike the Fire TV awesomely integrated on the rear screens inside the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Google built-in is found on the main infotainment system within the driver's view.

The integration of Prime Video within the Google Play Store app on specific models, including the Polestar 2 and select Volvo cars, such as the yet-to-be-delivered EX90 and EX30, shows the tech giant's efforts to revolutionize the in-car entertainment experience. Drivers and passengers can now enjoy watching their favorite shows and movies while the vehicle is stationary. This is especially handy in EVs, where drivers must wait for their cars to charge.

Google's foray into the automotive sector has been a steadily progressive journey. Polestar, the EV brand under China's Geely, has been at the forefront of these developments. The Google built-in product, powered by the Android Automotive operating system, seamlessly integrates the company's automotive services directly into the vehicle.

Volvo and Polestar were early adopters of this technology, introducing it in 2019. As a result, the two brands have consistently been the first to receive new apps. YouTube was added to the lineup earlier this year, and now, Amazon Prime Video joins the list of in-car entertainment options.

Polarizing views will surely be stirred as critics will no sooner point out road safety issues akin to this vehicle technology despite the system's built-in safety measures. The irony is that Volvo is a brand synonymous with automotive safety.

The collaboration between Polestar, Volvo, and Google lays the foundation for the future. Upcoming models from Polestar, such as the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4, are expected to offer even more extensive capabilities, including larger screens and a diverse range of apps.

The rollout of Amazon Prime Video will follow the implementation of YouTube with Google built-in. It will commence on September 18, with new cars getting delivered to customers with pre-installed apps, then proceeding with a gradual over-the-air update (OTA) available market by market. It's also available globally, except China, South Korea, and Vietnam.

As streaming services become integral to our daily lives, their integration into our vehicles remains a questionable balance between entertainment and road safety. Of course, this is something smart drivers shouldn't worry about.
