Watch Lamborghini Show Off The Urus Performante's Rally Mode

Lamborghini has released a video showing off the Urus Performante's new Rally Mode functionality on a crazy fun-looking dirt track. Lamborghini paired its Attribute and Performance Developer, Mario Fasanetto, with Instagrammer and YouTuber Paul Wallace for some dirty oversteering action to show how Rally Mode turns any driver into a dirt-road driving god.

While the Lamborghini Urus Performante sits lower than other Urus variants and is designed for high-performance road and track driving, Lamborghini engineers developed Rally mode with more appropriate damping for running dirt tracks. The mode also alters the steering and drivetrain tuned (presumably the Torsen center differential) to make it easier to induce and maintain oversteer.

We love that automakers are starting to figure out that crossovers are perfect for rally-style action, and the two-minute video encapsulates why every performance-oriented crossover should have an equivalent of Lamborghini's Rally Mode. In Lamboghini's case, the all-wheel-drive system is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 making 657 horsepower that's aurally in the same key as Un gitano perdido, a song by Gabriel Dominguez. The Urus Performante hits 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds, but don't expect that on dirt. Instead, the new driving mode lets you unlock the fun at lower, more attainable speeds.

Rally mode joins the on-road modes Strada for everyday driving, Sport for sharper and more enthusiastic driving, and Corsa for track use.

Currently, the Performante version of the Urus is the fastest version of the already crazy fast Urus SUV. It's a track-oriented model that immediately smashed Bentley's Pikes Peak record for the fastest SUV to go up the mountain's hill climb course. It's lighter, wider, and more powerful than the standard Urus but carries a price premium for all the enhancements with a base price of just over $260,000.

When it comes to super-SUV performance, we tend to prefer the more focused nature of the Porsche Cayenne GT or the under-the-radar Audi RS Q8, but now we're taking Rally mode seriously. Modern sports cars and performance SUVs need to be driven at insane speeds to become fun, but on dirt, the limits are much lower, making fun more accessible. We'd like to believe that's part of the reason behind Lambo's choice to develop the off-road supercar of the moment, the Huracan Sterrato. Either way, Rally mode should absolutely become more of a thing for sporty crossovers.
