2023 Subaru WRX Sedan Review: Rally Performance, Modern Aesthetic

It has only been a year since the second-gen Subaru WRX Sedan entered the fray, and while it isn't perfect, it does bring a lot to the table. It is a performance-focused sedan separate from the Impreza that rides on a completely different platform. Under the hood is a turbo-charged four-pot that puts out 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft, giving the sporty sedan a fair amount of grunt; you have the option of a high-performance CVT with an eight-speed manual mode that offers quicker shifts and a downshift indicator when it feels that you might not be getting the most engaging experience. Buyers may cross-shop other spicy sedans like the Honda Civic Si or Hyundai's Elantra N - or even consider the more muscled Dodge Charger. As our review of the Subaru WRX will show, the Japanese sedan's tight handling and bold looks combine with a very reasonable price tag to make it a compelling option.

2023 Subaru WRX Sedan Handling and Driving Impressions

Handling is where the 2023 WRX Sedan really leaves an impression on drivers. The suspension is all about ensuring epic levels of grip, thanks to Subaru's legendary all-wheel drive system. This also empowers the sports sedan with the ability to tackle roads that few of its rivals would dare, though it can give them a good run for their money on smooth asphalt, too. While it may not have the most power on tap, there is plenty of oomph to launch you out of a corner, and the accurate steering means that you don't have to be afraid of those twists and turns. That accuracy is the result of a dual-pinion electric power-assisted steering system that separates the input shaft from the motor-assist shaft. But, when you're not looking to set corners on fire, drive modes like Normal or Comfort help soften up the suspension for a more relaxed driving experience. The overall ride quality is otherwise pretty good, though not on the same level as a car specifically designed for a laidback drive.

Verdict: Is The 2023 Subaru WRX Sedan A Good car?

There aren't many direct rivals to the 2023 Subaru WRX Sedan. It's the only real, rally sport-inspired sedan left in the USA. Its all-wheel-drive system and improved ground clearance give it the kind of authenticity that runners-up simply can't match, but it can definitely hold its own around town, too. Handling is sharp and accurate, with enough power to ensure an engaging and enjoyable driving experience. Another strong point is the sedan's incredible safety ratings, with a perfect five stars from the NHTSA. Still, it's far from perfect, and while it may be a playful sedan, its lack of driver-assistance features makes it seem like poor value for money when compared to similar vehicles. In fact, to get some of these systems, you are required to upgrade to one of the most expensive trims. Aside from this, we would have no qualms recommending the WRX Sedan as both a fun sports car and even an everyday driver.

What 2023 Subaru WRX Sedan Model Should I Buy?

The engine remains the same across the range, and you can add the performance transmission to any new Subaru WRX Sedan. As such, it comes down to what features you can and can't live without. The Premium is the bare minimum since it adds a larger infotainment screen and some comforts like heated front seats. However, if you want more than the barebones driver-assistance suite, you are forced to upgrade to the Limited, which is a fair chunk of change more expensive. The GT adds some fetching exterior elements but doesn't bring enough additional value to warrant the price.
