2023 BMW X7 Review: The Big Bimmer

by Michael Butler

If you're looking to drive around seven people in serene luxury, there are several cards on the table, but few combine the same level of luxury, comfort, and performance as the BMW X7. This is the Bavarian automaker's largest SUV and among its competitors the BMW X7 counts vehicles such as the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Mercedes-Benz GLS Class. The 2023 X7 gains a new front end, a bunch of new tech, and, most importantly, a decent bump in power. The base turbo six now makes 375 horsepower and the baddest of them all, the Alpina XB7 now makes a massive 630 hp. With a dynamic driving style, copious amounts of luxury, and a face only an owner could love, this SUV is a popular choice in the full-size luxury SUV class, and in this BMX X7 review, we take a look at what makes this big Bimmer so good.

2023 BMW X7 Changes: What’s The Difference vs The 2022 X7?

Customers in the USA get a refreshed X7 for the 2023 model year. The new BMW X7 receives a bolder front end, optional 23-inch wheels, a redesigned dashboard, more tech, and more power. Inside the cabin, the new dashboard houses BMW's latest 14.9-inch curved iDrive 8 infotainment display with voice commands and augmented-reality navigation. Heated front seats become standard on all trims, the base xDrive40i gains standard multi-contour comfort seats, and BMW's Digital Key Plus (iPhone-as-a-key functionality) is now optionally available on both trims.

Under the hood, the xDrive40i's turbocharged six-cylinder engine is more efficient and now produces 375 hp, up 40 hp, and 398 lb-ft of torque, up 67 lb-ft. The V8 model changes names from M50i to M60i and gets a more efficient powertrain too, while this trim now has standard Integral Active Steering (rear-axle steering) and Active Roll Stabilization. The Alpina XB7 now makes 630 horses, up 18. All trims get a new eight-speed automatic transmission that comes with launch control and a new Sprint function that optimizes the transmission and all vehicle systems for maximum sprint acceleration at the pull of a steering paddle. These changes go with a redesigned center console containing a much smaller new gear selector.

The standard frontal-collision system gains additional functionality, notably reacting to oncoming traffic, warning the driver against approaching pedestrians or cyclists upon turning right, and also automatically applying the brakes if necessary. The paint palette also sees some changes and includes a new shade called Sparkling Copper Grey.

Pros and Cons

  • Refined, high-class cabin
  • Quiet, comfortable ride
  • Powerful engines
  • Advanced new curved-display iDrive 8 infotainment
  • Useful 2023 spec improvement
  • Less cargo space than rivals
  • Tight third row
  • Tricky infotainment system
  • Controversial frontal styling

What's the Price of the 2023 BMW X7?

The xDrive40i is the cheapest BMW X7, with its MSRP starting at $77,850, excluding tax, registration, and a destination fee of $995. That price rises to a hefty $103,100 when you opt for the V8-powered X7 M60i. How much you end up paying for it will depend on how many boxes you tick; fully loaded, the range-topping model will set you back close to $125,000.

2023 BMW X7 Handling and Driving Impressions

The BMW X7 might be a seven-seater SUV, but BMW has put some effort into the way it drives. It's not a sloppy family hauler by any means; it drives like a sporty limousine. The X7 rides on standard air suspension, which makes the ride incredibly smooth and, combined with a noise-proofed cabin, makes for one of the most serene driving experiences around. BMW also offers the X7 with rear-axle steering and active anti-roll bars, making driving even easier in the city and around tight corners. The X7 isn't a sports car but it handles better than most of its rivals. Riding on standard 21-inch wheels, or newly optional 23-inch monsters, the X7 will never conquer the great outdoors, so stick to the city and highway. All the engine options are really strong, even the base power unit, which gets a big power bump this year and offers plenty of performance.

Verdict: Is The 2023 BMW X7 A Good SUV?

The luxury SUV market has become so competitive that manufacturers are trying to create cars that do it all. We all know that is simply not possible, but the 2023 BMW X7 SUV comes close. This seven-seater full-size luxury yacht might not be for everyone, but it does its best to impress, and the 2023 model is better than ever thanks to more powerful engines and a long list of new tech. The exterior won't be to everyone's taste and the new face is arguably more controversial than ever, but the updated new cabin of the X7 is undeniably luxurious and bristling with tech, most notably the huge new curved iDrive 8 infotainment display. On the road, the X7 is dead quiet and drives better than most of its competitors. The choice of engines makes the X7 even better, and if we had to choose, we'd go for the monumentally powerful V8 option. The third row is a bit tight, the cargo area small, and the off-road ability minimal, but the X7 covers so many bases that you can't help but be impressed.

What 2023 BMW X7 Model Should I Buy?

With a significant difference in the price between the trims of the new 2023 BMW X7, each of these trim levels will attract a different type of buyer. The base model will suit you just fine if you're after a comfortable and luxurious family hauler. The inline-six engine offers more than enough performance, especially now that it's more powerful for 2023, and the list of standard features is impressive and lacks very little besides perhaps leather upholstery and a few driver assists - which can be added. If you have more than $100k to splurge, then the M60i should definitely be on your radar as the last word in performance and handling in the seven-seater class - with all the practicality of the base model.
