The Volvo XC40 Recharge has set itself up as a little giant in the compact electric SUV segment. Based on the already popular XC40, it has a lot going for it, like a quality interior, a good list of features, and understated but stylish good looks. The only thing that held it back in its gas-only form was a mediocre powertrain, and that has been remedied through the miracle of electrification. The dual motor setup produces a healthy 402 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque that sees the 2023 XC40 Recharge hold its own against industry giants like the Tesla Model Y and hotshots like the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Now with a few more refinements, the compact Volvo crossover isn't shy about striving for the top step of the podium.
Improving its looks has been the primary focus of the updates to the new Volvo XC40 Recharge electric crossover. It comes with a refreshed front fascia that includes a frameless grille plate and a new bumper, similar to those found on the larger C40 Recharge. It also inherits the Thor's Hammer LED headlamps. On the interior, the major change is the new vegan leatherette upholstery options. There are also some extra choices when it comes to wheel styles and paint colors.
The price of the new Volvo XC40 Recharge reflects its status as an electrified luxury crossover, with the Core trim starting at just $53,550. The mid-tier Plus will cost you $56,250, while the Ultimate is only a few grand more at $59,500. These are the MSRP prices for the Volvo XC40 Recharge and do not include the $1,095 destination charge.

Despite the extra weight of the electric components, the XC40 Recharge handles just as well as its non-EV counterpart. That being said, you can feel just how heavy it is when you push it to perform. That's not where its strengths lie, though. This is no hot hatch, but rather a comfortable luxury cruiser. It can go fast in a straight line and overtake lesser cars on the road, but you should treat corners with respect. Grip is good, so you won't lose control easily, but there is definitely some body lean, and a lack of feedback from the wheels gives little in the way of confidence. The steering gains a little heft when accelerating, but it remains light and accurate around town.
Ride quality is where the crossover shines. The suspension easily soaks up most road imperfections, and the cabin is well-built for a silent and serene experience. Driving ease is also a highlight since you can rely on the One Pedal Drive and regenerative brakes in most situations. You'll only need to use the brakes when coming to a complete stop. It won't take too long for this style of driving to become a habit.

The increase in EVs across the USA has prompted Volvo to release a new line of pure-electric cars, including the stylish electric C40. This means that the XC40 Recharge faces heavy competition, not just from without but also from within its own brand. Still, it's a good car with an easy-to-live-with driving style and a truly comfortable ride. It also has a badge and name that people know and respect, along with a good list of features and a gorgeously plush interior. People who are hesitant to buy an EV will like that it looks so much like the normal XC40, making the transition easier. The Volvo XC40 Recharge safety review is also incredibly positive. This all makes it a good choice for those looking for a change without all the fuss, despite the fact that there may be better options out there with greater overall range at a more reasonable price.
Considering the price of the car, we feel that the base-level Core is probably the best deal. It has the same performance outputs as the higher-tier trims and it gets loads of convenience and luxury features as standard. The few things that are missing can be easily added at a lower cost than a trim upgrade, such as the Climate Package, but we feel the Exterior Styling kit is unnecessary. One of the XC40 Reharge's strengths is that it doesn't try to be flashy.
