There's Great News About Alfa Romeo's Twin-Turbo V6

Engine / Comments

We sense an opportunity for more combustion-powered special-edition supercars.

According to Autocar, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato has confirmed that the marque intends to keep its 2.9-liter V6 gasoline engine around amid impending Euro 7 emissions regulations (set for introduction in July 2025). The updated regulations, negotiated upon last week, are less stringent on passenger cars, meaning that this Euro 6-compliant engine will still be legal for years to come.

While the CEO did not disclose where the engine may find a home in the future, he was clear that it should meet updated emissions proposals when asked if the V6 would survive: "The answer is yes, because I'm expecting the result of Euro 7 [proposals] this year. I would like something [compliant with] the [new] regulation to be interesting."

The engine currently finds itself in use in the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, but a bored-out version of the block also appears in the belly of the new 33 Stradale.

It's remarkable that the engine appears to be emissions-compliant since it was introduced way back in 2015. This engine was developed exclusively for the hot Giulia by Ferrari technicians and is related to the F154 engine that powered the even older California T.

But in its favor, the engine features cylinder deactivation technology for lower emissions, which is part of why the F154 is still going strong in Maranello. In fact, the 3.99-liter twin-turbo FB version that finds itself in the SF90 XX special editions meets CO2 regulations while producing a whopping 1,016 horsepower (with the help of three electric motors).

But back to Alfa Romeo, which previously claimed that the Tonale crossover would be its final combustion offering before going strictly electric.

Alfa Romeo has already teased us with the promise of another low-volume supercar scheduled for introduction in 2026, but when CarBuzz asked the brand's senior VP in North America, Larry Dominique, about whether the 33 Stradale would be the last Alfa powered by a combustion engine, he was unsure, saying that it probably would be. With this new comment from Imparato, it seems that Dominique either didn't know about the plans of his superiors or was playing coy.

Either way, it's encouraging to see that combustion still has an immediate future in Italy. Over in Germany, BMW has made similar announcements, revealing that its staple engines will meet Euro 7 requirements, before the legislation eased up.
